digitalslacker
By now most of you have heard that Time Magazine gave their title of 'Person of the Year' to both Bono of U2 and Bill & Melinda Gates. These people undoubtedly deserve the title. But let?s say you can only pick one, Bono or The Gates. Who would it be? Please make as much of an educated guess as possible. Base you decision on the humanitarian accomplishments of each party. For all of you MS lovers/haters please try to put your opinions aside for the sake of this poll. I did search for a poll on this subject and while I did find 3 previous threads about it I found no polls about it. I do apologize if I missed one. Enjoy! Raum
I'm too ignorant to say. I know Bill donates much time and money to helping others, and I respect him much for that, but I have no idea what kind of work Bono does. I only know I didn't care for his music. I'll vote for the Penguin.
Kerm
Bono. Although Mr penguin came a close second.

crazzy88ss
I've at least HEARD of bono doing that kind of work in the news in stuff. I can't even remember the last time i saw gates's name even mentioned anywhere. hmmm
turbomonkeycock
Unquestionably Bill Gates. If you were to compare the percentage of personal fortune donated to charity for both i'm sure bill would come out on top. Also, does Bono actually do anything except moan and hang about with Bob Geldoff?

Chris Allen Veteran Posted January 3, 2006 Veteran Share Posted January 3, 2006 I can't say Bono is doing nearly as much as The Gates. Promoting a career off of how you 'help the children' annoys the hell out of me.
Cvrt7.62Ghst
Gates. Bill is a good man, people just think he is evil because "oh noes! It's a corporation!". Honestly, that ****ed me off when I saw Bonehead on the cover of the mag standing between them - Time should be ashamed of themselves. ahhell
Bono is a tool. Why would he be "person of the year"? What did he do that was newsworthy? Live8 was a pathetic joke. brotherrabbit
ahhell, do yourself a favor. pucker your cornhole up and stop talking out of it. you clearly have no idea what your talking about, in fact i'm sure your just relay some stupid trendy comment that your friends said at your grade 9 lunch table. bono has done alot for charity. regardless of the fashion he's done it in, there's issues to raise, he helps. people like you just allow those issues to stand idle, "we know the issue in africa" YA OK ? So what are you as a person that CARES, going to do about it?
ThunderRiver
Bill gates my vote.. however, Bono has done a lot of work in the past to promote peace and etc. I do see a lot more footages where Bill and Melinda show up at poor areas and try to understand the situation, and even provide locals the money to start up their own local business. They could be sitting on their private island sipping drinks and not worrying about the heck is going on around the world, but they care.. it is one reason why they get my vote. digitalslacker
Bono has done a great deal for awareness when it comes to Africa and extreme poverty around the world. He's also been a great asset to using what has been coined as 'moral blackmail' to get leaders of the major counties to donate more money for the fight against aids and poverty. The Gates have contributed a much greater monetary amount as well as setting up multiple foundations to help many different causes both in the US and abroad. TIME chose them both because they felt that they were both equal contributors in their own ranks. Trust me I?m sure that the people that were tasked with that choice did their homework. I didn't start this poll so a flame war against Bono or The Gates could ensue. If you don't have an educated opinion on the matter please vote for the penguin, that?s why I put him there. To simple say that bono is a tool or that he's promoting his career by help children is an example of an un-educated opinion. I'm too ignorant to say. I know Bill donates much time and money to helping others, and I respect him much for that, but I have no idea what kind of work Bono does. I only know I didn't care for his music. I'll vote for the Penguin. this is what you do when you don't know anything about a subject. Thanks Raum!

So what are you as a person that CARES, going to do about it? Yeah, nice - don't have a real defence so you resort to personal attacks. Bono has not done alot for charity. In fact, the only time he realy does anything for charity, is when it will get him in the limelight. Bono is not a tool, but he uses charity AS a tool for his popularity, and for that he should be ashamed of himself.
Liandros
gates has done a tremendous job in donations and charity but his software is not up to par. bono tends to use charity for attention which is bad but his music is good. my vote goes to pengiun. digitalslacker
That's not 100% true. But I can see your point. I think what you need to consider is this. To say that Bono does it JUST to get publicity for U2 is a little bit of a stretch. U2 has been a top band for 20 years. They have a good amount of publicity already. If you read a recent interview (believe it's on U2.com among other places) with Bono he said that he's become so passionate about this charity work that it's put a strain on U2 as a band. When Bono gets up on his soap box and goes on a tirade about poverty and AIDS in Africa during a concert he has his drummer watch a stop watch to prevent him from going on too long. Now ask yourself why would someone that is only doing it for a publicity risk annoying fans that are paying to see a show and the other band members if he wasn't passionate about it? Just Google 'Bono charity -pro' (so you don't get a lot of Pro Bono references) and you'll see. You can't simply say that Bono hasn't done much in the way of charity. You should have voted for the penguin bud.
Cvrt7.62Ghst
My question is, why did time have him standing in between Bill and Melinda? Why isn't the man and his wife standing together?
