I've seen more than a few people complain about power hungry mods here. I've had a dispute over something they did here and there....it's to be expected, none of us are perfect. I don't think they're power hungry though. I could name one or two mods that I think do a bad job of letting their personal views get in the way of their decision making (Not here to pick on people though, they'll remain anonymous), but overall I find myself very satisfied with the modding this forum does. Most forums I can't say that, and Neowin, despite how much I visit, is honestly one of my least favorite forums. I prettymuch only come here because I haven't found anywhere to replace the forum I used to frequent that got shut down by Blizzard. It's rare that my complaints with a forum don't include the mods though. Wanted to hear everyone elses take.

you haven't seen power-hungry until you've seen me leave a path of crushed newbs and banned accounts in my wake - there are at least three other posters here that can vouch for that one ;)

and these threads never turn out well, no matter where they're posted and regardless of how well-intended they may be.

I'll second that. I have had a 100% warning rating for months now, and despite how bad of a member I am I've yet to be banned. I think that speaks volumes for their tolerance in itself.

if admin counts as well, id like to personally single out neobond as downright unfair and a big meanie.

*waits*

oh... 1000% warning rating. *dies*

:p

seriously though, no beef with any mods whatsoever. (Y)

In all areas of discussion you need people such as "mods" to help control the discussions. The owners of neowin do not want to spend their hard earned time checking to see if people are sticking to the guidelines, when they could be updating the website to bring us more and wonderful features. The idea of "mods" is fantastic.. It leaves the owners knowing they have full control of the board even if they are not currently logged on and viewing the discussions... So in over all... "mods" can only be very useful in every aspect of a forum board.

What I meant by that option is "Leave the forum to the users for the most part, but if anyone comes in here constantly spamming some website, tries to constantly scam people, posts tons of child-porn or something else of a highly nefarious nature, someone with higher powers will ban them"

Not have Admins go through threads and pick out flaming, troll baiting and other smaller scale things, just take care of things on the bigger picture.

Not that I agree with this method being suitable for Neowin, but others might.

It sometimes irritates me that you can't have a discussion on the edge.... before you know the thread will be cleaned and closed.

Can you elaborate that first part some? Kinda late and I'm not sure what you mean by it. :p

Well, sometimes you see heated discussions about apple vs microsoft or amd vs intel.

Even discussions where people make good points in an argument tend to get cleaned or closed.

You have to be so careful what you say, because before you know it a mod comes in with his broom and sweeps it away.

I've seen this happen various times when I thought it was just a vivid discussion. Sure there were some persons using strong words, but that shouldn't be a big problem.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't think it'd be a problem if people could just refrain from personal attacks and keep a cool, civil head about them when arguing. Unfortunately most people can't seem to handle the idea of someone not sharing their views.

They do good enough a job as far as I'm concerned. Just a shame there are people out there who make having moderators necessary.

Yep. I've never had a problem with a moderator, and I hope I never do. It looks like they're rather efficient and I haven't seen an out-of-control thread since I came here. Good work!

I would say that overall, Neowin has improved and the mods are less power-hungry than 1-2 years ago, but then again I just had one of my posts deleted because I felt a little offended by a racially fueled joke :s. I thaught that if anything, it would be appropiate that the joke would be deleted, not the comments of those who find it offensive. It doesn't matter though, because I, as a member, am required to respect the decision of moderators. Questioning the actions or decisions of forum moderations is unacceptable.

i just dont like the way you cant object, or comment about their actions...

i mean... neowin better be careful, or the US might invade in search of oil... i mean... to remove the dictatorship

Its a 50/50 thing for me. I think the mods generally do a great job but I have to question decisions on moderation sometimes.

I got a 20% warning added for, and I quote 'Circumventing the swear filter' - this was because I wanted to write a swear word but thought I better asterisk out a letter - so if the word DUCK was a swear word, I put D*CK and I got pulled up and warned for it! I wasn't circumventing the swear filter?! I put the asterisk in there to make it no longer a naughty word!!

Having said all that though i'm a Super Moderator for a pretty huge car forum and know what it can be like - and its impossible to moderate on a totally case by case basis, with the rule book at your side, and no influence from how you're feeling at the time. Sometimes someone just does the wrong thing at the wrong time and they feel the full extent of your scorn - and thats the way of things.

Overall the modding here is good and the guys here are a decent bunch.

As long as it avoids turning into a "bash the mods" thread, these have usually been allowed to continue.

If I were the mod that dealt with that thread you were talking about, I would have done the same thing. It is pointless to remove the dumb comment that starts a flame war, and leave all the attacking/insulting replies back. :ermm: A clean-up will typically entail removing the initial offending comment and all replies to it. It makes little sense to get rid of the dog that pooped all over your couch, but leave the poop still on the couch. ;) If any comments were "out of line" and require an official action (such as a warning level increase), then those are taken care of, as well. Other than that, a reply that was deleted as part of a cleanup is no big deal.

As for the moderating team here, and having been part of it, let me just say that it is a 90% thankless job. You volunteer your time cleaning up crap, only to get complaints (and occasional insults) in the forums or in your PM inbox. They do a great job despite of all of that, and the staff has a forum where all actions can be discussed. Potential problems can be reviewed by many staff members to come to an agreement of appropriate action. There aren't any "loose cannons" or "power hungry" mods here.
