0 -outcast-
People run betas to have the latest software and it's cool to see what software everyone will be using, before your friends do. I've installed loads of beta software on my machine and I've had nothing screw up, worse comes to worse, you just have to uninstall the program. Thats my experience at least. 0 Ruciz
I wonder if there were betas for machines. like cheese machines.. could you imagine the cheese abuse that the poor milk had to go through to get to become cheese in beta cheese machines? horrible... just plain horrible. anyway, as long as its not like beta firmware I'll try it, I'll try anything once. Usually beta programs never screw up my computer, alpha programs sometimes lag my computer behind a lot resulting in deletion, but then everythings back to normal. Beta OS's either work or they dont', either way I have everything backed up cause I usually don't plan on sticking with them anyway cause they are lacking features that are incorperated into the final version of the previous build of the OS/Program. its always fun to try new things though. 0 Tesseract
I have only one computer and i install betas on it at times. Though it is better to install them in a different environment, I like to play around w/ them. :)

It would be better to install betas on a test machine, but I myself am selective in what betas I install. So far I have had no probs. Long live betas!!!!!! 0 harleydog
Been playing with betas since Win95. Have had lots of machine crashes, BSOD, wierd stuff happen. It has been an excellent learning experience and keeps things from being dull and boring!!
0 Roger H. Veteran Posted August 5, 2002 Veteran Share Posted August 5, 2002 well what about Windows XP. It's final but it's basically a beta cuz fixes are constantly coming out for it. No product is ever final so that's why i get betas. It's basically the samething as final cuz it might not work on your PC so well or even crash more than a "beta" would. 0 atomoverride
Thats why I use my small e-pc that was a celeron 550 with 64mb of ram, then upgraded it to a p3 733 with 256mb of ram with a 13GB hard drive for testing. I must reinstall or use ghost on that bad boy to test all sorts of crap all the time. Its very usefull, and for 200$ back last year when I bought it its saved me tons of time from not destroying my primary pc.
0 BxBoy
I personally don't try out betas, unless I'm a beta tester where I can give feedback to the author. I've beta tested a few products in the past. The benefits include free licensing when the product is final. ;)

0 Roger H. Veteran Posted August 5, 2002 Veteran Share Posted August 5, 2002 all i know is that any program out there is in a constant state of BETA, nobody has ever realeased a program and didn't have an update for it. Nobody is that good so in that sense why not get other betas. You really think XP SP1 beta is gonna screw you more than say a nVidia driver or MSN beta or AIM beta? You keep wishing.... It all depends on your configuration and even final software can be beta on your system cuz it just fails to run on your particular configuration no matter what you do. 0 McKrout
i've ran into a few issues with betas, my system blue screened after i insalled SP1 on XP and i ended up loosing everything on that drive, played with some different OS (inlcuiding betas of some linux distros) and i lost everything on my other drive (learned a lesson there) reinstalled XP and the SP and its all good, running msn 5 beta, msn explorer 8 (cant use it, but its there) and wmp9 beta/alpha/whatever it is and i think a few other betas. i see it as a learning experiance if it screws up and if it works fine, then im lucky cos none of my friends have it yet. so yes, i think betas are a great thing. do i think everyone should use them?? no, betas are for the user that has a general idea of what makes his/her pc tick because if an idiot uses a beta of something, 9 out of 10 times, they are loosing everything. 0 sunnyy4
The thing is, some people would like a preview of what is to be anticipated in the next version, so they test out the program. Another possiblity is that they want to feel like they're contributing something to the program by testing it and then reporting the problems found... I hope this answers your question... :)
