If you haven't been checking out the news, the folks over at AOL Time Warner seem to think that making AOL Instant Messenger interoperable with other instant messaging systems is a waste of time and that consumers would be uninterested in this benefit. Some may argue that they have already seen programs that can connect to the AOL network, Trillian for example. The problem with Trillian is that it actually uses AOL's resources to operate by connecting to AOL's chat servers. The issue at stake here is getting the instant messaging servers themselves to communicate with each other, a much more daunting task.
Even though this task is daunting, it is indeed possible. What needs to occur are the creation of instant messaging standards and protocols that are easy to integrate into new instant messaging software, and that would allow those with a properly configured chat server to build their own instant messaging system. AOL Time Warner, Yahoo, and Microsoft need to get together, form these standards, rewrite their software to adhere to these standards, and then open source the whole thing so others can play too.
