Gary King
Is there any program that I can use to lower the bitrate of music files? Like MP3s, WAVs, etc., so that I can lower the file size of the music files.
0 Prasanth
reencode with your favorite encoder app. the quality will be crappy.
0 threetonesun
Any good auido editor can do this, but depending on what the original source was/ what your sending it to in quality, the sound could get really bad. If it's just WAV to .mp3, then the degredation shouldn't be noticeable (provided you use a good mp3 bitrate). If it's .mp3 to lower quality .mp3, then the sound will be bad, if not outright terrible. 0 hareball82
decode them with winamp, then re-encode them in mp3Pro format. you can encode them at a low bitrate such as 64 or 96 and it will sound as good if not better than a normal 128 or 192 bitrate mp3. 0 hobsgrg
There's a program in the windows XP Plus! pack which lets u convert ur entire music collection to lower bit-rate wma's with just a couple of clicks.
0 Glowstick
If you reencode something, it will always sound badder than the original encode. You can't reencode something and think you raise the quality.
0 Fedr0
Tom said it right. In case you didn't know, these formats (with the exception of the wave) are all lossy, meaning that you will lose some frequency cuts to have such a small file.
0 Gary King
So it is not suggested to lower the MP3s bitrates, to have a smaller sized MP3 file? :s
0 hobsgrg
It depends what bitrate the mp3's are, if they are 160/192 or higher then they can be reduced to 128k without any real noticable loss in sound quality, if they are 128 then reducing the bitrate lower and keeping them as mp3s will produce a very noticable loss in quality, however converting them to 96k wma shouldn't produce a significant loss in quality, M$ claim even 64k wma is cd quality but if the music is rock music then it does often have distortion, but if its dance music then 64k wma are fine. 0 TwoZigzagColt45
I saved 5gig converting 2000 MP3s to 128 birate decode to wav. using Mp3 To Wave Converter back to MP3 using Lame encoder & A RobFantastic MP3 Encoder ;-)

You also processed it to improve quality. Would you have had the same results if you didn't "run it through several filters"?
