Matt T
I did several searches for a poll like this one but I couldn't find anything. I'm a bit surprised this hasn't been done before, but anyway... Which format do you hope wins - Blu-ray or HD-DVD? I'm voting for Blu-ray. Edit: I just relaised there is a poll like this a few topics down from mine :pinch: Sorry.
l77Il7H
i used to be a big fan of hd-dvd but i favor blu-ray now because hd-dvd was delayed. hd-dvd only advantage was to release it first and have it on xbox360 at release date but it failed at both. so, i see no reason for hd-dvd to exist now. mAcOdIn Veteran Posted January 10, 2006 Veteran Share Posted January 10, 2006 Well I'm buying a PS3 so I hope it's Blue-Ray. I don't love sony, I have nothing against HD-DVD, but you get so much with the the PS3, DVD player, Blue-Ray, SACD, and then a PS3, 2, and 1 on top of it all. So hopefully it'll be Blue-Ray. RGSPro
i dont want sony to win the market, so im backing HD DVD, besides, the name makes more sense in the era of "high def".
PyX
1. Blu-Ray holds 10 GB more 2. BD-ROM has a much faster Data Transfer Rate for movie application and comparable for normal use 3. Blu-Ray's name is c00ler. 4. PS3 will use Blu-Ray, so why not make it a standard because of all the above facts? Edit : I find it extremely stupid that those 2 formats haven't merged...... ?_? revvo
Depends of DRM imposed on us by Sony. I got a feeling that this will be a tighter fight than VHS vs Betamax because Sony actually has support from many companies for BluRay such as 20th Century FOX, Dell, Apple and Walt Disney. You'll find news about it and the supporting companies at http://www.bluraydisc.com/

hulibecker
I voted Blue ray, but one quick question. Can the PS3 with Blue ray also play standard DVD's? I've heard HD-DVD players will be able to but not heard bout Blue Ray.

Koolslacker
HD-DVD b/c you have a license to copy HD-DVD to your hard drive and share it over your home network. I know BD is better when it comes to storage capacity and speed, but I don't want to buy any product that would prevent me to share over my home network. +general chaos
HD-DVD 4 me... 1) Sony makes Blu-Ray and Sony = the Devil 2) HD will be better as far as using the disks on a PC (Blu-Ray is gonna have really tight DRM) 3) Blu-Ray IS NOT backwards compatable 4) Blue-Ray = More $$$
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted January 10, 2006 Veteran Share Posted January 10, 2006 Hold up. Neither Blu-Ray or DVD is backwards compatbile for the consumer, when they say HD-DVD is backwards compatible it's for the factories that make them because they're the same size disc. Both of them require a seperate laser to read DVD's.
RootWind
I hope HD-DVD wins for media, since it has less draconian DRM, no royalty fees, and no region coding. I personally would only want Blu-Ray for storage, but if so, I might as well go for holographic discs. In all likely-hood, no one is going to win, and everyone will end up having to buy multi-format drives.

Galley
2.4 Will Blu-ray be backwards compatible with DVD? Yes, several leading consumer electronics companies (including Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and LG) have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. Although it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with CDs and DVDs. Blu-Ray FAQ

icecaveman
I favor HD-DVD obviously and I have managed to convert everyone I know in real life to the same. There is no benefit from Blu-Ray if it's used for video playback, both formats will use the same codecs. OR do you favor Blu-Ray because you intend to use it to pirate lots of movies on a single disc? If so you must know there is not that long until holographic media arrives and that is far superior to both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. The version of Java they are going to use for Blu-Ray is not finalized yet, meaning some of the early Blu-Ray players will have problem playing the menus of some movies. JaredFrost
I'm going for HD-DVD myself I personally think they'll win for the simple fact that the masses are cheap, and there is NO video quality difference between the two formats, They use the exact same video and audio codecs Like Average Joe cares about that anyway. Sure, You'll say -But the Blu-Ray has a faster data transfer rate.. Joe doesn't care, He doesn't see this watching his movie. -But the Blu-Ray has a higher storage capability!.... Joe doesn't care, He gets his movie cheaper with the same content. -But the Blu-Ray has a cool name.. Joe doesn't care, His HD-DVD player is over 1000 dollars cheaper. -But the Blu-Ray will get cheaper over time.. Joe doesn't care, HD-DVD player and discs are cheaper now. I could go on all day about how cheap people are, Sure you'll get your gamers and computer geeks Me being one of them that wants more storage, faster speeds, But lets face it, We're the minority Average Joe doesn't understand nor care about it and I honestly couldn't care less which wins As long as that holographic disc keeps on getting developed

You'll never see that from Blu-ray most likely. Lol, that's as backwards compatible as the CD Dual Discs are, so I'm not for that at all really, and that's not backwards compatable at all. You're right though they probably wouldn't do that on a Blu-Ray disc since they'd have to pay two different consortiums royalties for the disc, but I think that kind of backwards compatability is fairly useless. Leddy
Blu-ray's going to have all sorts of DRM + copy protection crap (it's backed by SONY...) on it so HD-DVD for me. Not to mention that HD-DVD will be cheaper.
