Jelly2003
Okay, as much as I hate smoking, banning it in pubs is a ridiculous idea. Its almost like saying any kind of meat should be banned from supermarkets - it just wouldn't work. I totally disagree, this is a totally separate issue that affects people's health, not just the health of the smoker but also the health of the innocent people around the smoker. I agree that it is removing something that many people find enjoyable, and I feel sorry that they will miss out on their pleasure of having a beer and smoke at the pub. Unfortunately there is this problem: Not only does smoking damage the person who is actually smoking the cigarette, but their smoke in turn does MORE damage to bar staff and non smokers. So basically what is happening is that these people are enjoying a smoke at the expense of the health of other people, and morally I find that wrong. Also, passive smoking is more dangerous than actually being the person doing the smoking, because the smoker breaths in the filtered smoke, where as the passive smoker breathes in everything. Why should non smokers and bar staff have to get their health damaged because of other people's filthy habit. Pubs are not the domain of the smoker, there are many people who don't go simply because they hate breathing in the smoke and stinking like it. I agree, I don't smoke; and agree that maybe it would be good to ban in pubs and stuff, but not completely everywhere. Overall though. Smoking is for weak people. Think about it. It kills you - proven fact. It physically impairs your whitest killing you - coughing fits etc. It costs a fortune. Anyone who does smoke is displaying a very low intelligence level when presented whit these facts. My step dad smokes a pack a day, he has done so for the last 30 years, I hear him in the shower every morning having wild coughing fits. Sometimes I think he is throwing up. There is no way why I would want to do that to myself. You're obviously pretty ignorant if you think that smokers "low intelligence" because they smoke. It certainly isn't as simple as that. The problem is that cigarettes contain nicotine, your body naturally doesn't have receptors for nicotine, but when you start smoking and constantly exposing yourself to nicotine then you develop these "nicotine receptors". The nicotine receptors get hungry, so when a smoker is craving a smoke, it is like someone craving food. You can ignore it for a while, but eventually you really really need it and you'd do anything to get it. Someone who is addicted to smoking actually has a real physical condition that makes them need to smoke, it's not because they are stupid. That's why it takes a few cigarettes to get you addicted, it's because you build the nicotine receptors in your body over time. For some people it doesn't take long, and for others it happens really quickly. This is why it is so hard to quit smoking for many people. These people are starving a part of their body that requires nicotine, which would be a very very challenging thing to do. Obviously some people don't have as many receptors, so it is easier for them to quit than others. Also, this is why they start smoking so easily again, because the receptors never go away, and all you need is a single cigarette to get them going again. That also puts more weight onto the "no smoking" in pubs argument, because if someone who quits smoking goes to a pub or club than passive smoking can play a massive role in making them take it up again, which again leads to people suffering because of a smoker's filthy addiction / habit. Subfusion
I used to smoke weed everyday, then I started to do it once a week and managed to stop for 3 months. But now and then, it's okay if you take the occassional tokes :)
tony-inpo
To Jelly2003 My post was actually really regarding people who know the truths, health and wallet damage caused by cigarettes, and then go on to smoke. As I stated, I know how hard the addiction (or any addiction, but especially nicotine) is to break. Is there not a way of destroying nicotine receptors? By the way you wrote your post it was easy to draw the conclusion that you are talking about all smokers. I agree with you about these days there is a wealth of information that states the dangers of smoking, and I also agree that a non addicted person would be pretty stupid to decide to take it up. It's their life decision, but I still don't think that they properly consider the effects, and even if they do know all the effects, they seem to underestimate them. Out of interest, I do have a couple of questions 1) To smokers (and quitters): Did you know the effects of smoking before you started? If you did know them, did you under-estimate them? 2) To quitters: Has your health improved since you quit smoking? Would you consider going back to the way that you were? kronosguy
No I do not smoke and hopefully never will. Hey man chill. Smoke all you want. (As long as you don't smoke in my face) All of us do things that are not healthy, like eating fast food, which I believe is worse than smoking. But life would not be very fun if we only did things that are healthy. So if smoking makes you happy, smoke away (As long as it's not in my face) The only time you should quit is when it affects people who love and care about you, especially if they urge you to stop the unhealthy activity. thanks remix17. It's nice to know that there are still those in the world who are accepting of other people even when they are different then them in actions and/or beliefs. :)

Slugsie
NOT ANY MORE!!!!!!!!!!!! 20 days now! Me too, although I'm a couple of days behind you as I quit on the 2nd. :D With regards to the debate on a total ban on smoking in pubs etc, I'm partially against it. The way I think it should work is that pubs could apply for a license to become smoking pubs, with only a percentage of pubs in an area being granted licenses (say 20%). That way those that still want to smoke and drink can do. Staff get a choice too as it means that staff can opt to work in a smoking or non-smoking pub (don't forget, some pub staff smoke too, so they're less bothered by working in a smoke filled atmosphere). BTW, the ban wouldn't bother me either way as I don't drink.
