Seminole QB Sexton ends comeback bid

By BRENT KALLESTAD, Associated Press Writer

January 15, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida State quarterback Wyatt Sexton has decided to quit football after sitting out the past season because of illness.

Sexton, committed to a psychiatric facility in June after being found disheveled and disoriented on a Tallahassee street, said he will forgo his final year of eligibility to concentrate on his health and his studies.

"This has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make in my entire life," Sexton said in a statement. "I will focus on regaining my health and my academic pursuit of getting an MBA."

The school released the statement Saturday night without comment from coach Bobby Bowden or his staff. Billy Sexton, Wyatt's father, is the longtime running backs coach.

Sexton had been suspended at the time of the bizarre June episode for failing to take a drug test, Bowden said in July. That month, Sexton was diagnosed with Lyme disease and pronounced out for this season.

Sexton went 5-2 as the Seminoles' starting quarterback in 2004. In his two seasons, Sexton completed 142-of-257 passes for 1,717 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

He had practiced with the team in the fall and during recent Orange Bowl preparations.

Sexton would have likely entered spring practice competing for third on the depth chart with highly recruited incoming freshman Christian Ponder.

Rising sophomores Drew Weatherford and Xavier Lee led the Seminoles in 2005. Weatherford set an Atlantic Coast Conference freshman record with 3,208 passing yards.

Didn't know "God" played football.

He must have been pretty good though.

Why the "God" reference?

Sounds like a middle of the road QB who has some serious personal issues, dropping the G ref. is a little much...

Hmmmm, although I'm not religious - I can see how it would be insulting to call someone God because he was good at football.

Why the "God" reference?

Because during his delusional state of mind while while standing in the middle of the street he was

screaming out loud that he was god. Well FSU did fairly well this year without him, especially being replaced by a freshman quaterback so I dont see it as much of a loss. "God" shouldn't stoop" to playing football. :D

/\ haha exactly...It was meant to be a joke aimed at college football fans.

The dude went nuts one night and was screaming that he was "God"...thats why he got did time in a mental institute and why is he quitting football. It's really a sad story, considering how talented he was. If you got offended over the "God" comment then...ummm sorry

God "stooped" to being a man (Jesus), but most people didn't listen to Him anyway.

You guys should pay attention to sports news more often. There was a famous incident where he was laying in the middle of the street, apparently drunk or something, and yelling about he is God and stuff.

OK, Rillian, you may go away now. We don't need preaching about someone named Jesus. This is a thread about a college football player.

You guys can be major losers sometimes. He makes a comment about God that was serious, and you guys start calling him Falwell and say he is preaching. He made a subtle comment like other guys did, yet you want to bash him and try to insult him. You guys are ridiculous and need to grow up. Atleast he stands for something...and I never see him around this forum bashing others for making idiotic comments like you just did.

I'm not sure if you realize, but this is a sports thread.
