freeza
the AOL toolbar has "themes" so everyone who thinks its 'too girly" can change the theme of it to something more cool...i sure have :D
Yvo
y are there so much aol haters? Why you ask? Because the software is as unstable as a card pyramid. Not to add that the software is pure crap and that your forced to go through everything you have. Sure you can use 3rd party apps, but AOL doesn't condone use of them. Its that bad that major corporations (Boeing, Northwest Airlines) will fire you if you install it on your work computer. AOL is horrible... and the funny thing is that there are more AOL haters out there then AOL users :)

AOL 8.0 is still in beta, and it is as far from unstable as you can get it. I have it on Windows XP, and I haven't had a single problem with it, other than the few Known Issues that are mentioned in Beta Central on AOL. Those are fixed within the next week when a new build comes out. What exactly do you mean by "unstable"? What precisely makes it "pure crap"? "You're forced to go through everything else you have". What does that mean exactly? Also, AOL does not condone third-party applications. If you read through the Beta Central Message Boards, they try to make AOL work with as many third-party applications as possible, and will even try to help you if it doesn't work with something. They have no issues with you using Internet Explorer either.
iUk
Can you create your own folders and actually manage your email messages like you can in, oh I don't know, ANY OTHER PRODUCT? Is the email writer still a piece of crap that doesn't let you have any advanced editing? Does it ask you during installation whether or not you want Real Player, AIM, etc., or does it still install all of those "added" features by default and create at least 5 new icons on your desktop with out asking? Have they opened up their Instant Messaging protocols or joined a standards body to create protocols that ALL IM platforms can use as required by the federal government as part of their merger agreement? Shall I go on?

Hawkeye
Originally posted by iUk Can you create your own folders and actually manage your email messages like you can in, oh I don't know, ANY OTHER PRODUCT? Yes you can. Is the email writer still a piece of crap that doesn't let you have any advanced editing?Nope. What kind of editing do you want? It lets you choose font face and size; make text bold, italic, or underlined; make text left, center, or right aligned; change text or background color, insert pictures, insert hyperlinks, insert signatures. Obviously it lets you attach more than one file to the email as well, in which case it will automatically compress them all in a ZIP file. What features besides those could you possibly want? I can't even think of any more than that. Does it ask you during installation whether or not you want Real Player, AIM, etc., or does it still install all of those "added" features by default and create at least 5 new icons on your desktop with out asking? Actually, all products that have AOL Time Warner as their parent company place icons on your desktop. This includes Winamp, ICQ, and AIM. When I install AOL, it places a single icon on my desktop. It doesn't reinstall RealPlayer on its own if you already have it installed. The only time it will install Real Player is when it asks you if you want the AOL Media Player to be able to play RealMedia content. If you say no, it won't install it. Have they opened up their Instant Messaging protocols or joined a standards body to create protocols that ALL IM platforms can use as required by the federal government as part of their merger agreement? No, they haven't. First of all, this question has more to do with AIM than with AOL, and AOL users have pretty much no reason to install AIM. Second of all, Trillian works fine with AIM now, and AOL hasn't tried to do anything anymore, since they know it's pointless.Shall I go on? You can try, but I don't think you'd get too far. Yvo
Hawkeye... Explain why corporations are BANNING the use of AOL. Also ANY version of their software is so damn unstable on any computer. Not just AOL 8 is unstable, no I am talking about AOL 5, 6 & 7. When someone calls me and says they are having troubles with their computers and they are using AOL I advise them to remove it completely and about 2/3s of the time the computer runs great. The other 1/3 is that the computer completely crashes after AOL is removed. That is a great uninstaller there. While I might be wrong on the third party thing (it was like that a few years ago), what does AOL think about AOL2Pop? You are forced to use their software in order to connect to the internet. You are forced to get drivers (under 2000/XP) in order for it to work properly. An other dial up provider such as AT&T Worldnet or Earthlink does NOT require these things to be installed. You can't use your own email program unless you download a 3rd party program. Also on some computers IE does not work after the installation of AOL. Why are you defending AOL when they have made many errors.

Desktop Themes, Cascading IM's, etc...

ibetheone
Pluggz, that is one of the desktop themes you can apply(that one is my fav), I can't wait til people start making their own. A lot of people have already made some nice themes for aim at http://www.gigahosts.com/~c1003/aimicons/themes.php Yea the toolbar themes are a nice addition too, but they need to do some work on the cascading ims, it would be easier if they just made tabbed ims.
