Please help me

Question

Hi. I just got my Epox 8K7A motherboard with an AthlonXP 1800+ processor. I got 512 megs of PNY memory (it is certified for the board by CMTL). The problem is this: When I try to run the Windows XP setup program to update my installation of windows, it always locks up. It doesn't matter whether I boot from the floppy, CDROM, or if I copy all the files to my harddrive. I either get to the part where it asks whether I want to upgrade, or use the recovery console then it locks up when I make a choice, or sometimes I get past that, and then it locks up after I accept the Licensce Agreement. Please help, I have tried everything I can think of, changing BIOS settings to Fail-Safe and everything. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply. I have checked that and made sure that all four fans in the system were going. The temp inside the case is only 25C so I am thinking that is not the issue. Any other ideas???

hehe, my damn chipset fan died ages ago. the thing only lasted a few months. it's doing fine without one atm.

I had a problem that it crashed on "Starting Windows" in the first part of setup - when the low resolution dos screen becomes a high resolution one and asks you if you want to recover or install. I found out the problem was one suffered by some graphics cards using Nvidia chipsets and the way to fix it was to flash the graphics card - see the manufacturer's (not Nvidia's) website usually. You might want to try this but be careful you only do it if you know what you are doing.

No, no, no. When you install XP with a certain revision of the AthlonXP faster than 1700+, it will always lockup. You need to find the fsb jumper in your motherboard and select the 100mhz setting until you finish installing XP (if your motherboard is jumperless there should be a setting in the bios regarding clock speed, downclock it to 1150).

This, my friend, will work. :)

[EDIT]I never remember, it's 1150 by the way[/EDIT]

Damn #@%ing Windows XP. It still won't load. I have the bus set to 100 mhz, the processor at 1150 mhz, and the AGP bus set to 1x/2x. It locks up when it is either examining the disk, or right after the EULA, when it says loading setup.ini. The weird thing is that the floppy light comes on and stays lit when the stupid thing locks up. I also noticed that my ATA100 hdd is only running at ATA33. Any other ideas??? Thanks!
