If the skater actually knows what he's doing, I'll stand around a bit and watch him. I have mad respect for skaters. Not a lot of people realize how much time and effort it takes to actually be good on a skateboard. I've tried to skate some, and all I could do was a little bit of flatland stuff. But I'm seeing a bunch more skate-oriented stuff now and I'm starting to get back into it.

Most skaters where I live are talentless punks who you rarely see even holding a skateboard. They whine about the lack of skateparks and when they get one, you just see them goofing off in it. I asked a skater how he'd ollie up a parkbench and he just looked like a big questionmark and said "What the **** is an ollie?". So I mostly just think for myself "Lo-ho-se-her...".

BUT, if I see a skateboarder who's actually learned how to skate and does it responsibly, I might just let loose a whistle followed by two thumbs up. It's fun to watch skillful skaters.

I say "Damn do I look sexy"

I have to laugh at some of the comments here. I am a skateboarder myself.

I do not smoke pot. I do not "smoke blunts". I do not do any kind of drugs (except alcohol at parties). I do not destroy public OR private property and I'm not a run-away punk. I'm simply a skateboarder. I'll admit I'm not "the best". I will admit I barely know how to kickflip. I use it mainly for transportation purposes. You can call me a "poseur" but at no point did I say "I'm a mad skateboarder who had do mad tricks". I also don't do it "to be cool".

I voted other because most of the skateboarders I know. I just end up going over and hanging out with them or probably partying with them. I personally find that saying a skateboarder is a "marijuana user" or a "menece to society" is just as racist as saying "black people are theifs" or "Indians are alcoholics".

But I don't blame you guys for giving us looks. You should see the looks we give you "walkers" and "bike riders". We find YOU annoying....

i do agree 100% with this post.

I know quite a few skateboarders. I do not skate myself. I used to ride BMX and a lot of people think the same about them. I do not and never have or will do any drug apart from alcohol like mentioned above.

If i saw a skater then i may go and speak to them or watch if they are doing some good tricks or attemoting something.

Its a big misconception people have about people like skaters/bmxer's/bladers/any type of extreme sport really. Becasue its not "mainstream" people dont accept it as much as they should.

Just my 2 cents

I'm not trying to flame anyone (unless you mean people will flame me). I'm just posting to let people know that it's racist to think we are all losers who smoke pot a lot and destroy property when in fact VERY few of us do.

Misconceptions indeed. I'm a pot smoking skateboarder, but trust me, I'm definately a minority. I'd say at the very most, out of all the skaters I've met, there's one pot smoker for every 15 non-smokers. Consider the fact that I mostly skate with people in the 16-21 year old range as well, years where smoking pot is common compared to other ages.

Go check out the skateboarding forum I go to. You won't find any drug subforums....you'll find some on Christianity, Building your owns ramps (Oh wait, we don't do this, we destroy other peoples property!), Politics, Computers etc. We really aren't that much different from you guys for the most part. I know plenty of skaters who are really into console gaming, or that have high-end computers, program, read philosophy, study religion, work jobs and pay bills etc.

Could you link to the forum Raum?

Just because a person skates doesn't mean he's a burnout. It doesn't mean he's a vandal. It doesn't mean he's a punk. All it means is that he likes to skate. Don't be so stereotypical, all it does is make you look ignorant.

Pretty much sums up about 90% of the skater population. Personally, I usually say something to them or just stare them down. :D

The only thing I hate more than skaters are the people who dress up like goths.

If we're not getting in people sway or damaging property, what's so bad about us hopping around in a parking lot? Or riding down a street to get to a friends house? Is a skateboard that much less valid of a form of transportation to you than a bike, scooter etc?

Also, what connection does skateboarding have to employment? I'm quite interested.
