WATERLOO, Ont. (CP) - Microsoft Canada launched a $10-million fund Wednesday that is aimed at helping universities do technology research.

The Mississauga, Ont.-based firm, the Canadian division of U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp., said the fund will be made up of about 90 per cent cash and 10 per cent requested software and services. The Microsoft Canada Academic Innovation Alliance will provide support over five years and Microsoft Canada said it will invite eligible universities to take part.

"Microsoft Canada is committed to advancing collaboration between industry and academia," Frank Clegg, president of Microsoft Canada, said in a release. "This announcement is the first step in building closer relationships with the Canadian academic community."

The fund encompasses four categories, including academic research, education solutions, curriculum integration and industry outreach.

The first beneficiary will be the University of Waterloo, a technology-focused school receiving $2.3 million for several research projects.

Among them is one to develop a mathematical recognition engine for the Tablet PC, a hand-held computer created by Microsoft. The engine will let users enter and compute complex formulas using a special pen on the portable computer, the company said.

I'd also read that they were making U Waterloo add a C# course to the cirriculum and make it mandatory for all Comp Sci and Comp eng students to take it - think it was on Slashdot. Almost no one is using C# - seems that they're trying to push the program at the grass routes. We don't need any more C languages. Just standardise C and C++ for god's sake.

Funny thing is, my friend goes to Carleton in the comp sci program. Sun had just donated $10 million or something similar to the Comp Sci program. My friend said it wouldn't change the program and focus on Sun products. They'd never do that. No with the MS donation the proof is already there.
