i dont numbers but i can tell ya that AIM is probably one of, if not the most commonly used IM service, though i prefer MSN because of features, most people i know use AIM and yes ICQ is nice, but i never really liked it over all.

TS

PS: to solve the problem, download trillian and sign up for alll of the services

Hello sonicvibe,

It depends on how you define the various networks. Do you consider AOL Buddy List, AIM, and ICQ all AOL IM services? If so, AOL has the wide lead.

If you consider this from a perspective of only counting the freely available downloadable IM clients then it goes as follows:

1.) MSN/Windows Messenger (not including MSN Explorer)

2.) AOL Instant Messenger (not including AOL Buddy List)

3.) ICQ

4.) Yahoo! Messenger

ICQ is the only IM service that is loosing users quarter to quarter, and year to year.

If you group AIM + AOL Buddy List, the total AOL IM users surpasses MSN/Windows Messenger users by about 10-15 million. AOL's growth rate here in the US & overseas is flat...while MSN/Windows Messenger continues to grow about 2-3 million a quarter. At this rate, the combined MSN/Windows Messenger userbase is poised to overtake the combined AOL+AIM userbase in the next year or so. The key growth for MSN is all overseas where AOL is pretty weak.

edit: oh and I use MSN Messenger v5 & MSN 8. I also use trillian when I want to chat with some of my stubborn AOL friends.

I stopped using ICQ shortly after 2000b came out. The reason for that was a ICQ prog I found that had some NASTY options.

I rarely use AIM, main becuase it is too insecure for my tastes.

MSN & Yahoo I use about the same. 24/7 Prefer Yahoo cause I like the offline messages, message archive (stored on the server), user is typing a message, and my most favorite feature is the extra profiles.

I use AIM, because anyone can set it up. Even stupid people like my friends. Then, I can chat with my stupid friends. ANd they can send me .mp3s, because they can't figure out how to do it any other way.

No, my friends really aren't that dumb, but everyone at college use AIM exclusevely, even the nerds. You can ask for someones phone number or their screen name. I guess that works out nicely.

*Personally hates them all* :ponder:

Everyone I know uses MSN and so do I. Its the best network because all the people I talk to also use it. I don't really care about the clients because I use Trillian most of the time unless I'm on my Mac so I also connect to my ICQ account to talk to the odd few who aren't on MSN.
