Microsoft and Sony Take Rivalry to the Gridiron

Although some have been getting their fix via pre-season games, the NFL football season doesn't begin until September 5. However, the two big names in video gaming -- Microsoft and Sony -- couldn't wait until then to duke it out.

As of Tuesday, both companies announced that new NFL-licensed titles are immediately available on their respective platforms. For Microsoft's Xbox, it's NFL Fever 2003. For Sony's PlayStation 2, it's NFL GameDay 2003.

Calling NFL Fever 2003 "the ultimate NFL experience," a Microsoft press release notes that the game will be the first title to appear on Xbox Live, the broadband gaming environment it is introducing this fall. In the meantime, the game claims ultrarealistic graphics, including player models that reflect the size and physique of actual NFL players. Even accessories such as gloves, wristbands, face masks and taped fingers may be viewed. Photorealistic stadium models for all 32 NFL franchises are also included.

Sony counters with a game said to offer particularly realistic tackling, plus other competitive features. "No other football game replicates the intensity and the competition of the NFL better than NFL GameDay 2003," claims Ami Blaire, director of product marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America. "A new online feature allows gamers to play anytime with anyone across the country."
