Well if you want to get into SLRs, then that would exclude the Coolpix 8700 since it's not a DSLR.

The XT is a very nice camera for the price. It was my first body and only sold it to purchase the 20D for the stronger body. High ISO performance is very good and up to par with the higher price 20D. 8MP of course so you can make large prints or make significant crops and still retain enough MP to print large.

I would suggest you check out the XT in store however since many people consider it to be a little small in their hands, but the addition of the battery grip can add the needed bulk.

Here are some photos taken with a XT and Tamron 28-75 /2.8.

So as you can see, it is a very capable camera that can produce quality photos in the right hands.

Personally, I'd have my choice between Canon Rebel XT and Nikon D50 which is more appropriate to compare

and just a lil advice, do not take your decision on a megapixel stand of view

Go to a store, have them both in your hand, play with them, then go home and take your pick

Any real reason why you want to stay above the 8mp range? The whole megapixel thing is just marketing to make people think they need new cameras every year. I can print A2 posters easily enough at 6.4mp on my Canon 10D DSLR.

Even a 1D Mark I with it's 4MP can give incredible results which I think are better than my 20D. Owned one and only sold it because I needed high ISO performance. The 1D MKI can give good results shooting with high ISO when the exposure is nailed, but that isn't always an option for myself. I know I have to underexpose ISO 3200 once in awhile.
