IIS on XP - always seems to die after awhile

Question

Anybody else have this problem? It seems like after awhile, I can't get the World Wide Web Publishing service to respond anymore on Windows XP Pro. I don't know if it is just some software I install or what. But, it always seems that I get to a point where the WWW service won't start when I try to start it and it just gets stuck in a Starting state. I just had this happen a week ago so I restored to a previous image (Drive Image HDD image). Now today, things are back to a state where that service won't start anymore so I am going to have to restore to a previous image again.

Is IIS just very tempermental or something? It's just pretty annoying that I keep having to restore to an image that had IIS working properly.

Ugh... I'm back up and running again after restoring from my image from last Sunday.

No, its not just an issue with not being able to run ASP pages. It's the issue where my WWW service won't start at all. This means that I can't bring up anything when I hit http://localhost. I do have Norton Antivirus running but it isn't related (as far as I know) because it is the fact that I can't get the service started when I boot up or when I just try to start it via my services.

I don't know what causes this problem. Perhaps it is cause by me installing something when I don't have IIS running (I usually have it in a manual (not started) or disabled state when I am not using it). So, I guess I will just leave IIS Admin and WWW Publishing in an Automatic/started state all of the time and see if I have any better luck.

I don't mean to ask the obvious, but have you checked Microsoft.com Knowledge Base? Seriously, I've found a lot of answers there for these kinds of issues.

Try a search for "IIS not starting" or "IIS boot problems" or something. You might get a few hundred results, but just take a few minutes to read the titles in the search results carefully and see if you can find your answer there...

Heh, I have searched on google for quite some time on things like "World Wide Web Publishing" - "starting" - "hangs" - etc... and haven't found a solution.

I was thinking about this today and what I could have done to cause it. The only things that I can think of was me stopping unneccessary service and making a few perfomance tweaks (registry and otherwise). When this happened last week, I knew that I had IIS working on Sunday and I had made a drive image on Monday. When I restored to Monday's image, my IIS was not working. But then I used System Restore with my Monday image to the day before when I knew it was working. This did fix my problem at that point. So, it was something that had happened over a 24 hour period.

When I tried to use System Restore today to restore to earlier in the week (I know it was working on Wednesday), it kept telling my that System Restore had failed to restore (I tried several different restore points spanning last week). I had never had System Restore just completely fail before.

Fortunately I have an extra 120gb of HD that I use for just making drive images. So, I had a few different images to choose from that were made over the last month. I just wish I knew what happened to cause the IIS failures in the first place.
