I'm proud to be Irish, but I wouldn't say I'm that patriotic. Theres plenty wrong with this place, but I love it all the same.

I think the people who think America is a horrible place to be, i.e. Michael Moore/Cindy Sheehan (who claim they are patriots, but everyone with a brain can see through that) should find somewhere else to live.

Just because these people don't agree with certain government policies doesn't mean they don't love their country. The love it or leave it attitude is extremely ignorant, these people stand up for what they believe in, and who knows...maybe they're right.

I am but that country does not exist anymore. I am ashamed to be forced to write the new country as my birthplace in my passport; nor do I want to be associated with it.

That's rubbish mate, firstly there is not 'fact' about what country in the world is best and this poll is personal opinion so unless you've been to all those 14 other countries and also agree with the order then it's irrellavent.

Secondly, why should someone being patriotic be a racist? Just because someone flys the Union Flag which has been hijacked by minority racist groups should not mean that anyone flying it is a racist. I hate to say it, but it is people like you who actually create the problem by being ashamed to fly the flag. You should see it as your duty to change it's symbolism and take it away from those that do use it as a racist sign and defeat their disgracefull ideals, and that is why I have one on my cieling, why should you just sit there and let ignorant people walk all over it.

I do agree though that many people that are outrageously proud of thier country are often very narrow minded, but not everyone.

well would you say that the UK is the best country in the world? if you would then i classify you as a racist because you arent basing that opinion on fact. if sure you arent racist, but i was just trying to describe to people that they might have a different idea of patriotism because in many countries they dont have the crazy zenophobic type of patriotism that we have in england and the usa.

oh this is the list that i use because the things that are used to calculate hdi are what are things that i think are important to making a country "good" its the best way to work it out in my opinion.

I don't really see how someone who thinks the UK is the best country must therefore be a racist, it's just completely illogical. My exact point was that there is no 'fact' in this topic, it's opinion.

You may think HDI is what makes a good country, but have you actually been to them? OK HDI might be a nice indicator of certain aspects but it doesn't account for every possible variable ever. I've spent a lot of time in two of the countries listed above the UK in that list and whilst they do have better elements to them, they also fall way behind the UK in others. You should base your opinion on experiences and not just narrow minded tables.

I find zealots extremely annoying, especially since it's all on the same planet.

I'm personally proud that I'm a far better person (intelligence, image, talent) than those who waste time caring about an inanimate "thing".

So, to answer the question: No, I'm not proud. I am not ashamed either. I like the UK (and India, and some USA), but I have other things in life to direct my affection towards.

I'm from the USA, and I'm not too proud of my country. Does that mean I'll automatically be flamed and told to move away? Puh-lease. Nice try, j'ose. I was proud of my country, until President Bush took over and declared war. Ever since 9-11, we have changed from a peaceful country to a zealot-filled, overloaded patriotic country. I mean, I can understand why we would be so patriotic -- we were attacked, but we have to realize we aren't above the rest of the world and that we DO have problems, too. I think sometimes Americans have it so good (including myself) that we become arrogant and comfortable, and reject anything that's not the norm. I know I've been guilty of that myself.

What I can't understand is why the government is trying to ban same-sex marriages. They love each other--love is what counts. Why not allow them the luxury to marry? If you don't like or support it, ignore it, don't attend it, but let them enjoy that right, too. That really bothers me (since I'm admitedly bisexual).

Also, what's the whole point of the domestic spying? It seems like we, the average Joes, keep losing our rights everyday, getting shafted. If I didn't know any better, I'd think Bush used 9-11 as the perfect excuse to take over America and have a power grip.

I have said enough -- this isn't really a political discussion board, and I'm getting WAY OFF topic. But, what I said, are my OPINIONS, and I'm entilied to them. If you disagree, fine -- don't flame or blast me or try to brainwash me into believing otherwise. I'll do the same. Thanks.

Native Chinese here. I have also lived in USA for almost half of my life. China has had her ups and downs. Chinese people have been through a lot. Now, China is about to shine again. I'm really excited and looking forward to it. And Yes, I'm proud of China.

What do I think about USA?

Love it? No, used to respect it though.

Leave it? Yes, I did.

I'm proud of the US, sure, but I'm certainly not proud of all the Presidents we've have.

Country & Presidents/Leader/Whatever Else = Two different things. Shouldn't let that get in the way of if you are proud or not.

That is a good point.

I'll put it this way:

I'm proud of the country I live in, for the things it was founded now, not the things it is doing now. I'm not going anywhere though, because I love the freedoms I have, and if anyone says, "Sure, the 'freedoms' you have." you can go f*** yourself, because I do have those freedoms.

I agree with Night Hawk that our country and our president are two completely different things. Being Patriotic doesn't mean following the leader blindly. I don't follow Bush, because I don't agree with many things he says/does. A real Patriot will over throw their government if needed. Am I one of those people? I'm not going to say, as it hasn't come to that yet.
