I was thinking about what the best way to password a computer is. I know my bios has an option to prompt for a password when the computer turns on. This way, I don't have to set a password for both versions of xp. If I need the winkey+l funcionality I can use autologin and everything will be smooth, no other prompts needed. Do you guys have a password? Would the bios password be more secure than the windows one? Obviously both is better, but who would actually type in two passwords on every restart? Please give feedback :)

I type in two passwords every boot. I supposed BIOS password is more secure of the two, as people may be able to get hold of and crack the SAM file that stores the windows passwords. On the other hand, they could just remove the hard drive / reset the bios to get around the BIOS password. Nothing is 100% secure, it's just what you feel will give you most protection.

I just use the windows password.

Even if someone came into my house and did manage to log onto my PC, what are they going to find? A few games, a bit of browsing history and a few naked webcam movies. :p

Seriously though, what's the worse people could do? Format? Oh no, they could do that without your password.

edit : they could always rip out your harddrive and use it as a slave in another PC. windows passwords aren't really going to help you at all.

Encryption is what you need (and make a backup of the key).

Regarding the choices for the poll: Yes, I do use passwords. for my neowin account, gmail account, other forums...

I actually don't use any type of passwords to boot my computer. I feel it's a waste of time because the only people touching my computer is my family.

And if my computer gets stolen? Never. I live in the most granny-villed areas of T.O.

I use whole-disk encryption. Virtually uncrackable. Of course someone could still format the disk.

The other disadvantage is that backups of the disk are more difficult (because every bit must be backed up and compression sucks).

I use a password with autologin, because I run a PVR (Beyond TV) and it doesn't like to be run as a service. Nobody touches my computer anyway, and even if they did they wouldn't find anything.
