to my understanding, when ghosting your source hardware must be the same as your destination.

if you just need to move your important files to the new harddrive, then i suggest setting it up as a slave and just move the data over.

Does it give you a error message when you try and boot into windows after cloning? I'm pretty sure that you can clone different size drives as long as the amount of data you are copying doesnt excede the smaller drive...

You can use Ghost to clone different size drives. It just sounds like Windows XP just doesn't know what to boot from. You can try booting from the XP CD and doing a "repair" install. This should keep all your settings. It's worked for me.

Ok, let me get this straight...

You are trying to clone a 20 GB HD to a 40 GB HD and the OS is Windows XP?

I have done this many times and never had a problem

You may already have done so, but check jumper settings/BIOS settings, and make sure that partition is ACTIVE.

You might want to try using the little M$ utility called sysprep.

This prepaires a NT/2k/XP drive so it can be cloned. It works across many different IDE controllers (which is the error you are getting). Plus you HAVE to use sysprep is use a domain controller as the SID has to be changed or you will not be able to join the cloned images.

So, you error is because the IDE controller is different then the original. Try sysprep and let us know. sysprep can be found on the XP cd underSUPPORT/TOOLS in the DEPLOY.CAB

Good advice. Sysprep is not dependent on on hardware being the same. All you will have to do is name the computer and enter the CD key and you're off.

From my understanding, you cannot resize an NTFS drive from Ghost. It must be FAT32. I have used the Enterprise version for a while now and I use the FAT32 file system to ghost and resize then when I am done I just convert to NTFS. Hope this helps.

Is the old and new computer virtually the same setup hardware wise?

I may be wrong but i dunno if its the best idea to do that cause when you set up windows all the drivers are ser in for certai nhardware, if its a whole new set of hardware then wont it severly mess up cause all the drivers and settings for hardware are different...?

I may be wrong, I just know when I tried this a long time ago in like 98 it cause me seriuos headaches and I ended up having to reformat anyways.

Ok people i finally did it right.

Yes! sysprep does help in making the system ready for cloning. And the problem i got IS because of different IDE controllers in the old PC and new PC.

grpwise, ghost doesn't do partitions but is does create 1 active partition to store the clone info from the source drive. After rebooting with the new drive just create new partions using PM7 or s'thing.

Again thank you all for your help.... ;)
