Last year I stayed in Australia for several months and fell in love with it. Things went sour with my girlfriend, I lost my job over using twist ties instead of zip ties inside of computers, and I was mugged in Canberra of all places...

But despite this, I know it was just a streak of bad luck and I didn't let it effect my view of the country in general. I've spent years in Europe, the Middle East and North America, and toured places in Asia. But no place has appealed to me as much as Oz did. I am seriously thinking of moving there, but I know it can't be without it's own flaws, like all places.

So, Aussies, how would you rate it? Where do you live and what are your gripes? All input is very appreciated.

I'm 29 and have lived in Australia all my life. I've been to several other places in the world and would definitely say that Australia would have to rank in the top 5 places in the world. I know I'm being by but I can't help it.

I live in Melbourne, Victoria. I grew up in a place called Richmond which is 15 mins from the heart of the city. Recently moved further out to a new house.

I love everything about Melbourne. Melbourne is sometimes called the sporting capital of the world. We can sometimes have 3-4 big sporting events going on at the same time. We have the Australian Open (Tennis), Melbourne Grand Prix, Cricket matches, golf, AFL, soccer, rugby, the list goes on. Also we have a huge sports field in the city called the MCG. Currently holds over 100,000 people. Its an fantastic site to see when its full, and you have 100,000 fans yelling and sreaming. I'll attached a pic of it.

The weather here is pretty good. But you sometimes tend to get 4 season in one day. Summers are hot, winters aren't very cold.

We don't seem to suffer any of natures natural disasters like other places in the world. Australia doesn't get tornados, earth quakes, typhoons, mud slides, hurricanes. We do seem to get a lot of bush fires in the summer though.

The economy is one thing that lets Australia down though in my option. The exchange rate isn't to bad. I think it might 76 cents to the US dollar at the moment. But it?s the GST (taxes) and stamp duty, that I hate, but this isn't really going to effect people coming over for a holiday. Mainly if you want to by land or a house, sell a house.

Also on the economy. I'm a Network Administrator. I get paid $55,000 a year. It cost me $14,000 to go back to school to get my MCP, MCSA and A+ certificates. I think the average wage in Australia at the moment might be $32,000.

That?s it I think. Oh, crime here isn't much of an issue. We don?t have war break outs, we haven't had an terrorist attacks YET, we don?t have gang killings like you might find is East St.Louis.

So all in all I think Australia is awesome, people are great, beaches are beautiful, shopping is awesome, its a great place to live, to visit and bring up your kids.

ps. sixnine design i need to ask you a question, was it hard to get your a+ and mcsa?? because im currently in training to become a+ certified, a ccna and a mcsa, so im just asking how difficult it is :) thanks

" I've been to cities that never close down

From New York to Rio and old London town

But no matter how far

Or how wide I roam

I still call Australia home

I'm always travelin'

And I love bein' free

So I keep leavin' the sun and the sea

But my heart lies waiting over the foam

I still call Australia home "

I love Australia and everything that comes with it. The people here are just so nice. Sure we have hooligans and what not, but what place doesn't have them. What I truly like about this place, is you can go off to a pub and make best friends with everyone. If you're fair dinkem, then you're alright..

We don't get all the new stuff as it comes out like other countries. We are somewhat late, but not that big a deal really.

Us Aussies are the most lade back people you will ever meet. Come to Australia and fall in love with the place...

I've lived here all my life :) Australia is a great place to live, sure it's not perfect and we got our fair share of problems (i.e. like mentioned before we get stuff later then everyone else or not at all etc) but over all, it's great

For me it would be too hot, some parts of are highly prone to forest fires (which will either burn down your house or blanket the city you live in with smoke, neither of which sound all that great), there are water restrictions (not sure if that's all over), long periods without rain wouldn't suite me, the snakes and spiders would scare me (or kill me, neither of which 5 find overly desirable), racism seems to be quite a problem there at the moment (yes I know that is not something unique to Australia), most of it is just desert, the current prime minister (and his party) are a bunch of moronic clowns (also not just unique to Australia) and they produce some of worst TV and movies known to man.

I don't believe it to be any more “awesome” than dozens of other countries.

HaHa. You make it sound like we all live in the bush. Yes we have alot of bush fires in the summer, but it doesn't blanket the city in smoke. The fires are hundreds of kilometers away.

Yes there are water restrictions, Victoria had a drought a few years ago. We have water, but the goverment brought in the restrictions so we dont waste the water we have. Basiclly we cant water the garden during the day, or we cant leave the hose running while we wash our cars (which is common sense anyhow).

Snakes and spiders...........I've lived here for 29 years, I've only ever seen a snake at the zoo, not in real life. Seen alot of spiders though.

I agree with you on the current Prime Minister though.

Australia does produce some crap TV and movies, as does every other country. We also produce some fantasic movies and TV.

Racism has been a bit of an issue in NSW, no where else in Australia.

A+ was easy as hell. Actually finished my exam in 8 minutes.

MSCA wasn't hard, wasn't easy. Do you have an instructor?? If, so I think it all depends on how he teaches. And study really is the only way to help you pass.I didn't do CCNA.

Haha well you're a kiwi, so I'd expect that from you. Tons of you guys trying to live here, very little of us over there. I think pretty much explains it.

wow, I guess the ideas of being pretty introverted and almost too patriotic are true. I guess it's inevitable in such a large country, similar to the US. I don't have a problem with either country, I've had Australian friends and my g/f is American, it's just a little strange to see sometimes.

I imagine you'd be better off getting views from people who have moved there, that way the changes would be more noticeable and easier for them to comment on. I've heard quite a lot of bad things from people who have and a lot of good. The forum I posted earlier is filled with both so might be worth a look.

But that's only in Melbourne!

Although I can go from 35 to raining to 20 to 33 in a suprisingly short amount of time in Adelaide...

Although I would like to leave Adelaide at some point (it's a "slower" city than Melbourne and Sydney) I can still appreciate it as a great place to live and it's the kind of place I wouldn't mind finishing my days in, if i am so lucky as to choose.

Australia is a great place. Not perfect, but nowhere is. In the words of most positive feedbacks of ebay: "Highly Recommended. A+++++++"

The climate isn't that bad, the economy is doing pretty well but the people...calling them outstanding will be an overstatement. Fair is fair, there are always nice people but being anything but white may have problems.

I would say the friendlist people in Australia might be Tasmanians. Went there two years ago and made a pretty good impression on me.

Sydney probably has the worst racial problems. There were lebanese and asian (oriental) gang fights couple years ago and then the Cronulla riots recently.

And to top it off, there was also the "The One Nation Party" who were fighting for a "White" Australia...again. Even though Australia is termed a "multicultural" nation, most races seem to group together, you rarely see a group of friends from different origins.

Melbourne's weather is pretty funny most of the time. It's true that you can get four seasons of weather in a day... sometimes in several hours.

I was in Adelaide only four weeks back and I do agree that it is a "slower place". I circled the entire CBD (if you can call it one...) on foot in less than an hour.

As far as racism goes, I don't think it's bad at all. I'm a migrant myself (from Hong Kong), and have encountered no trouble. Most states have laws against racism as well.

However, due to the recent worldwide tension, sometimes we'd have spots of trouble in certain areas, (usually in NSW. heh.) where it sort of becomes something like White Australians vs. Middle Eastern. Last time that happened, it was on a beach in Cronulla, and several days later the middle eastern ball players and the white australian ball players came out and played a friendly match on the beach, and everything settled down again.

Australia is a pretty good country, I've lived there since I was three, but whatever you do, do not go to Sydney, if you do, do not live in the western suburbs. The public transport is appalling, the traffic jams are countless and the road tolls are heaps expensive. Melbourne, Brisbane and Gold Coast are all great places to go. The people vary, if you go to the north of Sydney, its violent as hell, so is the south, west is fine and east is fine as well. Good things about Sydney is the multiculturalism. Climate here lately is crazy, its like boiling hot one day, then full on storming the next day. Education wise, its supposedly cheap but their unis aren't that good, I'd rahter a British or American uni but it is a place full of surprises. I still recommend Melbourne, Brisbane or Gold Coast. Weather is better, people are nicer, jobs are easier to find. In Australia we have like a 6% unemployment rate.

Love it. I wont ramble about my life but the weather is fine but summer can potentially be pretty hard if you arent a fan of the heat (which Im not). besides that its good.

Ecconomy in the past decade has been outstanding and one of the best performing in the world. The AU dollar itself isnt as high as say Americas which is a pain when importanig items but we have had alot of growth in the past decade due to varying factors so the economy is very strong.

The people are generally pretty good too.

I live in brisbane, lovely place as was the gold coast when i lived there. They are about 1 hr apart but they are two different places due to one being on the coast and a holiday destination. It's amazing to see how differwent the locals dress. Anyway as above I dislike Sydney. Too expensive and busy for my taste. I do like to be somewhat laid back so bris is good for that.

'Gripes' The weather, Its a bit hot for me somethings (as in 40C+), Sometimes it can be 34C in the morning and then like 15 and raining in the afternoon *sigh*, Technology is exspensive compared to other countries.

Besides I love it :D
