Office XP SP2 Problem Thread

Question

Thought id start a thread for people experiencing problems with the SP2 for Office.

I get an error saying that the file PT2s.TMP has been updated in the past and cannot be patched again.

Thought it would be a good place for others to air there woes and the good folk of NeoWin to help us poor guys out ;)

I can't create an administrative Install Point, it gives me this error:

"You cannot create an administrative installation image from this source. Please run setup /a with an original installation source"

I"m using my SP1 CD,

I installed SP2 (non admin) no problem, without slipstreaming.

But I had to slipstream SP1 before SP1 would install.

That's because you cannot make an adminstrative installation point from an admistrative installation point. You need to use the original media to create a new one with SP2.

Anyone know if SP2 installs ok on Office XP's that in the past (with Sp2) said they couldnt be updated because they had been updated by other means btw?

You cannot installOffice XP SP's to pirated versions, so I guess this will be the usually whining as with Windows XP....

"I get an error saying that the file PT2s.TMP has been updated in the past and cannot be patched again"

...that is almost 100% due to the fact that you do not have a valid activated Office XP !!! So I would suggest that you get one.... ;)

I have never had to slipstream anything. I have gone to the office update website and and I worked for me. Then I just did a regular install with SP2.

I get an error message saying it couldnt find the version of Office XP it wants on my system. I have not installed SP1 yet, do I need to install SP1 before I install SP2?

Slipstreaming is just for convienence, it updates a CD so it contains XP and SP2.

I would tend to believe this as well, but that doesn't explain wht my MSDN version gets a similiar error? My PID also indicates a non-corporate version. The second set of numbers are 336. I had the same problem with SP1 but I eventually figured it out. I hope I can remember what I did to install it...

Dazzla's right. I just got a laptop recently with an unpatched Office (non-SP1) and just installed SP2 on it. Everything is fine and up to date.

Well there's been a lot of people with a lot of problems with SP2. Here is a step by step procedure to slipstream SP2 and getting it installed with no problems.

HERE WE GO!

1. Uninstall Office XP.

2. Whip out your Office XP CD and create a shortcut to the setup.exe on your desktop.

3. Edit that shortcut's properties and add /a to the end of the line in the target field so it looks like this "x:setup.exe /a " (where "x" is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).

4. Now double-click and use that shortcut to create an admin install point. (I used the default which was C:Office).

5. Now it will ask you for the key and what not during this process.

6. After creating the admin install point you should have a directory with 7 files and 1 directory called FILES.

7. Now download Office XP SP2 - Admin version (links are in previous posts)

8. Run the admin update and point it to a directory you can create. (I extracted my files to D:oxpsp2)

9. Now open up a command prompt and enter in this information (remember D:oxpsp2 is the SP2 files and C:Office is my admin install point. You might have to change these to match your computer) "msiexec /p D:oxpsp2MAINSP2ff.msp /a C:OfficePROPLUS.MSI SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE /qb /L* D:oxpsp2.log"

10. Now you can run or burn the contents of the admin install directory to CD and then install Office XP SP2 with no problems

This should work fine for everyone having install problems. I didn't need SP1 installed first.

Hope it helps you guys having trouble. :)

Could someone tell me what happened to the slipstreaming thread that was sticky but is no longer?

And could someone point me to the sp1 admin for office xp? I had it but I have now lost it and IIRC is required before installing sp2.

Hmmmmm I have sp1 installed and when I try to update I get this error (I tried the non-admin sp2):

The update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already been applied

EDIT the admin version worked no problems at all, i just ran the mainsp2ff.msp tomorrow i will see if it still works.

Tesseract: the link on the mainpage still works, just downloaded it

"HOW TO INSTALL OFFICE XP SP2

TO ALL OF YOU HAVING PROBLEMS (OR FRONTPAGE IS INCLUDED)

just download the Administrative Service Pack

http://download.microsoft.com/download/off...-us/oxpsp2a.exe

after download complete, create a new folder, lets say: C:OfficeXP-SP2

go to the directory that you downloaded the file oxpsp2a.exe

now double click on the file oxpsp2a.exe,

click yes on the licence agreement and choose a directory to extract the file:

C:OfficeXP-SP2

go to the above folder, yuo should find there two files: MAINSP2ff.msp, Owc10SP2ff.msp

NOW THATS THE GOOD PART!!

ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TO CLICK ON THE FILE:

MAINSP2ff.msp

(or C:OfficeXP-SP2MAINSP2ff.msp )

Walla you have Office XP SP2 installed

you can verify it by using Microsoft Word: Help - About Microsoft Word."

Found that in an other post. Hope it helps:P

For BeLGaRaTh, open the autorun.inf file on your office xp cd-rom (you may have choose show hidden and system files in folder options to see it). In that file, usually the second line it should say "OPEN=setup.exe" or whatever the default setup file.

For Tesseract here is a link to the OfficeXP SP1 Admin setup.

Office XP SP1 - Admin
