Kororaa LiveCD with XGL

If you're a linux newbie like myself, and are scared or don't know how to get XGL properly running on your computer. You will be happy to know that...

The Kororaa project has released a live CD demonstrating the new Xgl technology for 3D window manipulation and other unusual effects: "Today I am happy to release a Kororaa live CD showcasing Xgl technology. If you would like to find out what it's all about, then download the CD and boot up your PC! The Live CD comes with X.Org 7.0, GNOME 2.12.2, 3D support and of course Xgl. Supported drivers are 'nvidia' (NVIDIA) and 'fglrx' (ATI). Minimum recommended configuration is Pentium 3 with NVIDIA GeForce video card." Find more details on the project's home and download pages. I'm not interested enough in XGL to bother with setting it up on my own box, but a LiveCD demo sounds interesting.

And wouldn't you know it.....It doesn't work on any of my machines. Yay and woo. The X server fails to load on my main machine with a Radeon x850xt PE, and the X server loads on my laptop (Radeon 9000), but quickly goes into what I call "psychedelic lines and colors mode". Ah well, I'll mess around with this later, I have homework that needs to get done.

Worked here, the second time I booted it. However, max res of 1024x768 and no working DHCP or place to enter a static ip made it kinda boring after about 5 minutes. But I'll admit that I'm totally unfamiliar with Linux, so those two things wil probably be easy to fix.

If / When I get it working, I'll take some. But there are a bunch already available on neowin, and the rest of the web. Plus there are a couple really cool videos that Novell put out, showcasing the effects better.

Just because there's no gui tools doesn't mean you couldn't get networking to work. For DHCP you could've just done these steps from the command line:

1) dhcpcd eth0

2) vi /etc/resolv.conf

Then insert your dns servers in your /etc/resolv.conf file. Lastly have a look at your routing table:

michael@loki:~$ netstat -nr
Kernel IP routing table
Destination	 Gateway		 Genmask		 Flags   MSS Window  irtt Iface
196.2.120.1	 0.0.0.0		 255.255.255.255 UH		0 0		  0 ppp0
0.0.0.0		 0.0.0.0		 0.0.0.0		 U		 0 0		  0 ppp0

If you don't have a default gateway just do this:

3) route add default gw x.x.x.x

Inredible, i finally can play with XGL... great live cd. very impressive. Everything seems smooth, fast and just great. the effects just fly! Cant wait for this to get more complete and tested!

didnt work for me, got to the x start then blank screen, 9800xt

Did you look at the X.Org error log?

If so, did you get any of the following?

(EE) Failed to load module "GLcore" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (a required submodule could not be loaded)
(EE) Failed to load module "speedo" (module does not exist, 0)
(WW) Radeon: NO Matching Device Section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1)

I posted this problem in Kororaa's forums, hopefully they can get this figured out soon.

Pretty cool stuff. The way it tries to auto start X seems kinda buggy.

It told me there was an error starting X but the log was blank and after giving me the ugly xserver with the patterned background it eventually started GDM.

It runs pretty smooth though I suspect that is partly because the default resolution is 1024x768. 1280x1024 things slow a bit.

For 9000 and below ATI cards, fglrx doesn't support them. So the open source drivers must be used but Kororaa doesn't seem to do that. This probably includes the newest Radeon cards too.

Got it to run :)

runs smooth at 1024x768. Couldn't get it to run at higher res (no selection allowed - even though my monitor and video card can go higher). I'm not a Linux geek, so I don't know what confs to edit in order to get it to go at a higher res.

everything runs smooth as silk (except window resizing).

looks very impressive. I wouldn't mind getting this kinda eye candy on my desktop everyday :)

* Supported drivers are "nvidia" (nVidia Geforce and higher) and "fglrx" (ATI r350, r300, r250 and r200. Older cards not yet supported).

Not sure what you ATI guys are complaining about, checking the info on the site says your cards don't work. I have to add though that this is due to Xgl itself and not the live CD. Xgl hardly supports ATI cards at all. You'll just have to wait and see.

So, how does one change the resolution. BTW works perfectly with a 6800GT.
Well, the quick way to change resolutions is to use CTRL+AL+[num pad plus] or [num pad minus].

This will cycle through the listed resolutions in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. If your conf file doesn't list the correct resolutions, you will have to edit it before being able to select those resolutions.

I've tried this on two boxs which normally run widnows with no luck... its probably the fact one had a little ram and the other one was running on acient monitor. Ok not that old but it can only max 1024x768

Thank you for the tip. I'm a bit new to Linux and could not edit the xorg.conf file, because it is read only. When I tried su it asked for root password. I left blank and just hit enter (no root pw asked for when booting live CD). So my question is, how do I edit this xorg.conf file, or how do I get root priviledges on this live CD. Thanks!

Well, the quick way to change resolutions is to use CTRL+AL+[num pad plus] or [num pad minus].
