Christ! That IS serious. She DID go to the police right?

Yes she did take it too the police. Why do you think MySpace has been getting the bad rap as the place for such criminal activitys and such?

And for AXiao

about myspace with criminal activities, all i gotta say is, it happens everywhere, but the biggest issue is, people who dislike myspace will find articles about girls getting kidnapped after a meeting arranged on myspace and they do a red hearring (bad spelling and wrong term i think) on it, saying it's MYSPACE that got the girl kidnapped, in fact, myspace only provides the connection, but the decision making part still lies in us. i wouldnt easily choose to meet strangers off the net. remember the quote "guns dont kill people, I DO."?

You got to be a fool for saying that cause not alot of teens make the decision to meet pedophiles on MySpace. Pedophiles can do a search on my space for some kids high school and find as many teens as he wants their and find out where they live cause they post just about everything from their real name to their own address.

that's like blaming bit torrent the software for the high rise in piracy, myspace is a network that's open to anyone, and when you have a network like this, yes there will be pedophiles and mental serial killers looking for victims, but they can be prevented.

1. you dont have to put in those information, if you dont feel like putting them down, you wont be forced to, matter of fact, even the names can be changed

2. myspace has a private profile setting, anyone who wants to view the profile information must become that person's friend first, and to become a friend of a person, you have to contact him/her and get the permission to add as friend, the decision making part is still on the clients

3. if you are afraid of little kids giving away too much information on the internet, then you should monitor your child's internet activity, just like watching movies with them, you talk to them about possible pedophiles on the internet, or you limit what they can write and cant write, use parent's email address to sign up for myspace, basically be with them when it comes to finding friends online, still making your own decision. if my son is 10 years old and he wants to do myspace to find his friends in school, i wouldnt just hand him the computer and say "here's everything, do whatever", if parents dont spend time monitoring their kids' internet activities, then why should they blame the site for pedophile incidents? it can be prevented easily.

4. the same goes to yahoo, MSN chat, even sites like deviantart allows you to put in your photo location name and all kinds of personal information, do we have people running around doing the same thing to those sites like myspace? no. why? i dont know, why dont you tell me.

when it comes to kids on the internet, there are softwares to help filter contents and you can set parental passwords, but what really matters is paying attention to your kids, dont just rely on softwares and self-awareness. you ALWAYS have control over what you put in on myspace, the only thing you cannot change is probably your user account name that you use to login and your myspace domain name, which, mind you, CAN BE MONITORED WHEN REGISTERING AT MYSPACE.

for christ's sake, pay attention to your children.

as for adults arranging meetings on myspace and something unfortunate happened, i do feel sorry for them, but i have to remind everyone that, as an adult, you are responsible for everything, you are on your own.

Now if our going to say that I'm an idiot for believing that then fine. But I know for fact that it has happened and a girl I know got rapped and tortured by a pedophile cause she posted her name and everything else on myspace. She's recently deleted her myspace account but warns people about it and the dangers of it.

Why does that sound like bull****?

Need another poll option; 'I don't use it'

Leaving a child in front of an internet connected computer, unsupervised, is akin to leaving them alone in a busy city centre. Too many parents do this without considering and warning their children of the dangers. So sh*t happens. If a child was abucted from a city centre, you wouldn't really blame the city centre for being there would you.

As for myspace, I don't use it. I don't see these things as such a bad thing, they are a way to 'socialise' if you can call it that - and that is actually important to many people.

The msn/hotmail spaces thing is good to keep up with friends and see pictures etc of what they've been upto.

I think a lot of people are petty and childish in their opinions about it..It's nothing fantastic as far as websites go, and yes there are a lot of rather lame peopl eon it...

-BUT-

You do not have to look at these peoples pages, add them to your friends list etc. You can simply add the people you know and are friends with and leave it at that.

Used like that, it has its purposes, and isn't all too bad of a way to post a blog, keep in touch with not-so-close friends or people you used to hang out with and so on.

It gets a lot of **** from you guys when really you can easily ignore / not view the **** you guys go on about, for the most part.

  • 3 weeks later...

Early 90's web design (complete with horrific color choices), generally poor music choices that are hard to turn off, stupid pictures, profiles with waaay too much information. Some of the things people put down...

Well I have a myspace account that I don't use much. But it has been great for my band. Hooking up with bands in different states and trading shows. It's been very valuable to my band.

I have an account. Only allow friends to be my friends. I don't get into applying for friendship with thousands of hot girls or whatever. I just use it to keep in contact with people I know and may not real-time chat with anymore - being in real life or from the internet.

Whatever your reasons are for not liking it, there are always other practical uses for it. Use it as a tool and it will act as one, otherwise it's really your fault you got spammed - you shouldn't have tried to be all those girls friend. :o

I've had an account since it pretty much started, and I don't get spammed up the ass. And I only have about 30ish friends on it that I'd like to keep in contact with. I add and accept more as I see fit, but only people I know. It really isn't a bad site - if you know how to use it.

The msn/hotmail spaces thing is good to keep up with friends and see pictures etc of what they've been upto.

It's like this:

Friends I have using hotmail/MSN Messenger: 2

Friends I have on MySpace: 297...and I know everyone one of them personally.

I think MySpace is great.

Its a fad. You're "Cool" if you have a myspace account.

Yah i'm sure it's a fad but your generalizing when you say "You're "Cool" if you have a myspace account."

Not everyone that has an account on there does it to be part of that crowd, myself included.

In fact a lot of people I know and so on just do it simply to keep in touch with friends.

Although I do see your point.

I find it very annoying that kids go on there just to add every person willing to make it look like they are popular.

Myspace needs way better security.

IF your over 13 you can't even make anything friends only.

I only use it for the blog. I have tried other services but they are not as good yet.

They really need to get better on securtiy.
