Sony boss Ken Kutaragi has confirmed plans for a worldwide release of PlayStation 3 in "early November" at a press conference in Tokyo, which has now concluded. And by worldwide he means Asia, Europe, North America and Australia.

PlayStation 3 will also be fully backwards compatible with PS2 and PSone games, Kutaragi said, and all of them will be playable in "high-definition" resolutions.

All PlayStation 3 releases will be on Blu-ray, he added, while the system will support the latest HDMI inputs.

Contrary to earlier reports, the Sony boss also said that PS3 would require a hard disk. The basic model will be a 2.5" 60GB, upgradeable hard disk, featuring a Linux OS (unexplained), and - more interestingly - will apparently act as a home server, allowing users to store media on it and access them from elsewhere. This is effectively the opposite of what Xbox 360 does.

Kutaragi also spoke about the PS3's online service. Although he doesn't appear to have been jumping up and down shouting "Live killer", it sounds comparable from the outline reported by journalists at the conference, with a "basic" service available free of charge, community tools including lobby matchmaking and voice chat, and premium downloadable services that include game software you can run from the hard drive.

Sony's aiming to ship six million units this financial year (earlier direct reports used the phrase "by the end of 2006", but we now understand Kutaragi referenced Sony's financial year, which ends in March 2007), at the rate of one million units per month from release onward (which still doesn't quite make sense unless they kick off with two million, but then pinches of salt ought to be handed out at the door when it comes to "Sony" and "dates").

Final development kits will apparently ship to developers in June, which could imply that manufacturing will begin at around that time too - Sony will certainly be wanting to ramp up early after witnessing the response to Microsoft's Xbox 360 stock problems last Christmas.

There was no discussion of PS3 game software, or hardware pricing, at Wednesday's press conference, so it now looks certain that we'll learn about what we can expect to pay and play this November when Sony gathers us all together again at its pre-E3 press conference in just under a couple of months.

March 14, 2006 - The PlayStation meeting mentioned by Koei's CEO in a recent interview has been formally announced to the press by Sony Computer Entertainment. The PS Business Briefing 2006 March conference will take place on the 15th at 3:00PM (Japanese time) in Tokyo.

Attendance is strictly invite-only, just in case you've got any strange ideas about chartering a jet and flying over to Tokyo in time to attend.

SCE has not announced the lineup for the conference, but most are speculating on a PlayStation 3 appearance of some form. PS2 and PSP owners should have some surprises in store as well, from what we've heard.

Following an hour-long presentation, the conference will conclude with a reception. It is widely expected that lamb chops will be served.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. said on Tuesday it will allow the media and analysts to attend an annual meeting for third-party software developers of its PlayStation video game, prompting questions on whether it will give details on the launch of its next-generation console.

The meeting, in Tokyo on Wednesday, had been intended only for software licensees and was closed to analysts and reporters.

A Sony spokeswoman declined to give details of the meeting, to be attended by Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi, but analysts hope it will disclose the launch timing and price for the much-anticipated PlayStation 3 (PS3) console.

"These events typically address platform strategy, loyalty structures, development-related plans and other details that aren't as interesting to us, but the fact that they opened the meeting up raises the possibility that there might be more," said Yuta Sakurai, a senior analyst with Nomura Securities.

Sony said late last month it still aimed to launch PS3 this spring, but said it could be delayed if industry specifications for some of the technology were not finalised soon.

The PS3 launch has been the subject of heavy speculation in the industry as expectations are high for the powerful machine, which will feature cutting-edge technology in its DVD player, processors and graphics.

PS3 will compete with Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which went on sale last November, and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s Revolution, which is expected later this year.

Analysts generally expect the PS3 to be launched in the United States and Japan in time for the year-end holiday season for about $500 (288 pounds), with an initial software lineup of at least five to 10 games.

"Anything that differs from the consensus will be negative," Sakurai said.

One analyst, who declined to be named, said he believed Sony was unlikely to give such details on Wednesday because it would have planned a much bigger event for such a disclosure.

If Sony were to provide such details now, it would also risk conceding the limelight to rival Nintendo at the key E3 annual industry trade show in Los Angeles in May.

Shares in Sony closed down 0.2 percent at 5,570 yen on Tuesday. The Nikkei average ended down 0.75 percent.

New information regarding Sony's PlayStation 3 plans, which could include the pricing, launch date and initial software line-up of the console, is set to be announced in Tokyo tomorrow at a specially convened Sony conference.

Sony today confirmed that the conference, which has been widely rumoured to be the venue for new PS3 announcements since last week, will take place at 3pm local time (6am GMT) in Tokyo tomorrow, and will be open to media and analysts as well as to Sony's publishing partners.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi is set to address the conference, which will be the last possible venue for major PlayStation announcements in Japan before SCE's worldwide studios chief Phil Harrison's keynote at the Game Developers' Conference in San Jose next week, and probably the last chance for the firm to reveal PS3 details before its year-end on March 31st.

Although some commentators have suggested that the event may not include exact launch details since it is a relatively low-key conference, Sony can hardly afford to wait until E3 to announce further information regarding PS3, since it has as recently as last week claimed to be sticking to a launch timescale which will see the console appearing in Spring.

Other indicators also point to a significant amount of information being released tomorrow - most notably screenshots of a PS3 version of RPG title Untold Legends, which were reportedly set to be released on Wednesday morning but were accidentally revealed a few days earlier. The timing suggests that at least some of the software line-up will get an airing in Tokyo tomorrow.

The current expectation from most analysts and publishers is that the PS3 will launch either in late summer or early autumn in Japan, followed by a US launch before Christmas and a European launch in the first quarter of 2007.

in all seriousness, i'm interested in how many lies ken will spread this time round. If he can go through an entire event without trashtalking a competitor i will be very very surprised, but in a good way, since it's about time he grew up.

If the PS3 comes out in November, I'd be suprised if it came out in 06 in the EU. Look at the PSP, almost a years delay. The PS2 was launched at the beginning of March 00 in Japan then launched at the end of November 00 in the UK, a delay of almost 9 months.

They've already said they won't be doing a worldwide simultaneous release as it's not feasible, what makes you think they're going to release it in the UK at the same time as Japan? There's more reason to believe it will be early 2007, perhaps March 07, in the UK then pre xmas 06.

But still, it's easier to stick in a smily with a few words instead of explaining your reasoning, I understand :)

There is nothing crucial about getting the release out during the spring as long as it gets to the US/Japan by the holidays, which most people had expected to begin with, at least for the US. World-wide release is out of the question, but a staggard 1 month space between the US and Japan isn't. Europe will get the shaft as always.

Meh. Ill wait for an official statement. If they did delay it into November then Sony will have failed. A holiday launch is very crucial in the US. If they miss it. It will be a major blow.

Sony Computer Entertainment officially kicked off its 2006 PlayStation Business Briefing just moments ago. SCE President Ken Kutaragi took to the stage almost immediately following the press conference's start and apologized for all the PlayStation 3 speculation that has taken place over the past few months

PSOne emulator for the PSP sounds cool, hopefully they'll be able to compress them down a bit, I don't fancy 2.1GB just for FFVII (or whatever it was over 3 discs).

Fantastic news about the PS3 launch as well, first time ever they've not screwed over the EU. Makes Xmas interesting, I'll be preordering a few that's for sure.

They also said they'll produce a few million units of PS3 a month up until launch, that's greater than the PS2. Fantastic news, show MS how it's done Sony :)

Once release, Sony will unleash one million units per month with a total of six million units in 2006 alone. Production numbers are higher for PS1 and PS2 in their initial years.

They also said they want developers to create games under the assumption that a hard drive is present. Basically confirms that they'll be a single SKU which includes a HD.

HD + worlwide launch + Playstation brand + potential Xbox Live killer = Microsoft should be panicking.

There's so much potential for Sony to destroy everything that's come before it.
