tar is not a compression format it is an archiving tool. gzip is probably what you're thinking of. Gzip and tar are used together very often to make compressed archives, .tar.gz

Yes, tar and gz started out in unix, but most windows archiving programs can handle them.

I choose zip, simply because it is everywhere and it's been around for a long time. The space saved by .rar just doesn't matter with today's bandwidth and disk sizes.

Or it can also be a .tgz for short. tar can also be compressed with bzip2 to make a .tar.bz2 or .tbz2.

I use rar personally on best compression which often is really good but its nice when big files I download are compressed with UHARC, thats brilliant compression.

i always compress in .zip format since i usually need to send files people who knows little about computers. zip is nice since you can open it without third party software in windows xp
