Punkbuster sucks?

Okay. So here is my story.

I bought BF2 the day it came out. I played it for about 2 months. After that, I stopped playing because of all of the problems the game had.

Anyways ...

I haven't played in about 5-6 months, and just decided to re-install it. So I go and try to hop onto a sever that my friends are playing on, and I get kicked. I thought ... okay, I don't have the right patch. Then I get a message saying "GLOBAL GUID BAN xxxxxxxx".

Right.

So I contact EvenBalance and ask them what the crap is going on. They mail me back saying that I was using a banned hack in September (when I didn't even have the game installed). I don't even know how this happened. I never use cheats for any online games, and I didn't even have the game installed  . I e-mailed EvenBalance again and they said I could still play on non-PB severs, and single player mode, and if I wanted to play online again I would have to purchase another copy of the game. WTF?

This is totally lame. I'm not exaclty sure what happened here ... I don't believe I had any key loggers or weird programs installed or whatever. But one thing is for sure, I'm not going to fork out another $60 for a game I already own!

ouch..that must have hurt

I remember when I tried to play BF1942 again after a year or two, I got the 'Invalid CD Key' messages, although its a legit copy and worked earlier.

Since it was old game and I never played it anymore, I just went on with my life . lol

... I just got an e-mail back from EvenBalance. They said they have no way to prove it was someone else, and they don't lift GUID bans. They also told me that if I wanted to play online again I would have to purchase another copy of the game.

Screw that.

This is such BS. I guess that's what you get for buying an EA made game.

VALVe would do the same exact thing if that happened, but there's a very good reason. You are responsible for taking care of your CD-key/Account/Game so if someone jacked it it's sort of your responsiblity. It still sucks though, maybe you should buy Battlefield 2012 when it comes out.

Take out a class action (at least threaten to and make a big hoo-ha on lots of major forums and digg) ;), they can't prove that it was you.

Punkbuster is turning into the new Starforce. I've been reading complaints from alot of people on various message boards that Punkbuster indiscriminately decided to ban them for no apparent reason, or because of a freak occurance. Not only do bugs in Punkbuster that Evenbalance refuses to admit exist cause this, but badly-run servers, and malicious admins will also get you banned.

There should definitely be a class-action suit. What right do they have of disabling a product that you paid for? It's not like you have an option to go somewhere else to play, or you're given a second chance. This shoot-first policy is ridiculous. They don't even show any proof of your "crime."

This is a good lesson for anyone who thinks that corporations should be allowed to operate without oversight. You can't trust them. Once they get your $$$, you don't matter anymore.

Another possibility is that someone could have generated the same cd-key as yours, with an illegal cd-key generator. It's a small chance, but since there are so many people who use key generators, it's not impossible.

there's no possible way to take care of your cd-key. people just download a cd-key gen and you're screwed. it's not your responsibility

I got hardware banned and don't even know why. I asked but I got a typical reply with a "case closed" (the support ticket was closed after the first reply), man I was furious at that time. If they think I will replace all my hardware for some games then they are mistaken, I don't play PC games anymore ... how to hurt the sales even more ...

Punkbuster is garbage. Any game that uses PB requires ADMIN privileges. And IMO, any program that requires ADMIN privileges is garbage.

Someone needs to kill the project and make another anti-cheating solution that isn't crap.

I got banned when I didn't use my steam account for ages and a few emails back and forth got it all sorted out so that's not exactly true. I sent them a photo of me holding up a bit of paper with my email address on next to the game and then a scan of the serial key next to the same bit of paper and they just got me unbanned. I went a bit ott but they did say anything to prove i own the game.

Yeah, it's really not an effective program for catching cheaters at all. It's so popular though because game devs can just slap it in and say there's cheating protection.

That's the only thing I could come up with what happened. I mean, I even gave EvenBalance my IP address (since it's static) and asked them to compare it against whomever did this so-called 'cheating' ... but they responded 'we don't lift GUID bans. If you want to play on PB enabled servers, please purchase another copy of the game and avoid giving out your CD-Key to anyone.' Seriously, wtf is THAT?

This is getting ridiculous. I'm getting pretty angry since I DON'T want to pay another $60 for something that I already own.

There has to be something I can do. Obviously EvenBalance won't do anything since they're ban-happy jerks. Think if I contact EA they can do something? Worth a shot maybe?

so you went from starforce to ea? lesser of two evils?

In this case it wasn't EA that screwed up, it was Punkbuster. But still ... EA sucks for using PB ... :(

I have contacted EA support before, and I ended up with a free game after their top support agent was unable to find out what was up with my game.

Additionally, I had a similar situation with Black Hawk Down - bought it new and it said the key was already in use. I contacted Novalogic, and after a few (angry) emails, they released the key.

So I would contact EA - with any luck they will probably issue you a new key, unless they are able to contact PB.

Contact EA. It's worth a shot. The worst they can do is say "Sorry we can't help you" or maybe offer a CD key for less if you explain the situation.

Good luck though. As a buddy in real life I know how honest you are with your stuff and I can vouche that he would NEVER cheat.

Thanks dude. Yeah, I think I will try and contact EA Support. Hopefully it gets sorted out. :(
