really protect?

I'm reading stuff on it and I was surprised theres controversy on something that almost seemed sure of, that helmets cannot save lives, that they only protect from minor injuries.

What do you people think, for the people who do have one when doing whichever kind of outdoor activity.

I would like to know where you got the information about some controversy. If it was purely online/some random "expert" then I wouldn't trust it (personal agendas etc). Whenever anyone such as the government says anything about anything there are always people wanting to contradict it.

I guess you are questioning whether a helmet would protect you when in a serious collision or would just break up. I can't answer that but I would venture to suggest that you would stand more chance with the helmet than without.

The point of it is that it takes the damage instead of your skull. If you are wearing a helmet and get knocked on the head, you are supposed to stop using it as it becomes weakened.

well, yes and no. If for example your hit by a buss on your bike a helmet isnt really going to protect you, however, if you fell off your bike and hit your head the helmet WOULD save major damage.

Anything is better than hitting your head straight onto the ground, probably the difference between a few stitches and smashing your head open!

I was skating, and lost my balance and flipped upside down and hit the ground head first (i mean, before my hands, ass, or anything.. HEAD FIRST) on to concrete.

I forgot I was wearing my helmet, for like 5 seconds I thought I was dead. I then proceeded to sit up, breathe, and walk-away.

Well, when I fell face first (Fell too fast to catch myself!) into the ground going 30mph+ all I did was bust my chin open (22 stitches), lose some teeth, scar my forehead etc. Didn't bust my whole head open, only part of it.

Helmets can definately help. However, in all my time skateboarding (Over 6 years) I've only hit my head two specific times. The time mentioned and another where I had a very minor concussion. 2 days out of 2,500 isn't a big enough ratio to make me constantly wear a helmet. ;)

Only time I do is at skateparks where they require. The ironic part is neither time did I fall at one of the parks when I hit my head.

I've had my shares of falls when I mountain bike and trust me, helmet have saved my head from large...sharp rocks MANY MANY times..

You'd be a fool not to wear one :/

Trust me, it can save your life. I know this personally after hitting the pavement head first off a moped going 50 mph. I had a small concussion, but the doctor said I most likely wouldn't have made it to the hospital if I wasn't wearing it.

Well I myself agree that anything is better than nothing and that's why I wear one when cycling but I read these controversial things on sites like wikipedia. Now I know, Wiki is not that reliable sometimes but their section "The helmet debate" provides links to these so-called experts and they concluded that it does not reduce fatalities but instead, "minor" injuries.

Then again, I find it funny that organizations would fight against a security-measure that you'd think would only help the people and not be a nuisance to them.

a quick test to do is put the helmet on and get your mate to just tap you on the head with a hammer, then do the same again without wearing the helmet...

see which hurts more. then times this by loads and imagine its a car......

wtf? of course a helmet is worth it. a helmet is the difference between a minor injury and a life-threatening one is what i say.

I'm a survivor of both my "life-threatening" falls then. ;)
