Really curious about this, because I wonder how many people do use something else, or how many people have never touched Windows.

By everyday OS, I mean the one you use at home. If you don't have a home computer, you can answer either the last two options to the first question.

Go!

It's my everyday OS... I've been planning on buying a Mac, though.

I've tried Linux and OS X. and, frankly, i don't have the patiece to fuss with Linux... and I absolutely love the way that OS X works. so... yeh... :)

Erhm... I use Windows, Linux and Mac, each for its own purpose.

I'm missing the option: I use Windows, Linux and/or Mac...

I use Windows ... it's my everyday OS. I have not tried Linux or Mac or anything else, but I am looking to try Linux sometime in the future.

I use linux and windows. Linux is better in many ways, but it's not ready for prime time quite yet.

Here are some things that need fixing.

  • Inconsistancies between distributions in package management, file locations, etc are to large. There needs to be an established universal package system and a standards organization to dictate some norms for the way *nix works (they could offer some kind of certification)
  • There needs to be better hardware support (manufacturers bear partial responsibility for this).
  • Laptop support needs major improvement.
  • Documentation really sucks for most linux stuff.
  • Graphics and gaming need very major work. X11, Xorg, etc. are not great. Mac OS has a much better graphics architecture.
  • KDE is bloatware (still my gui of choice)
  • According to Linus Torvald, the 2.6 kernal is horrible and bloated
  • Dependancies (eek!)

Linux has made a lot of progress in recent years and increasing amounts of resources are being poured into developement, so none of these problems is insurmountable. My guess is that in the next few years, these problems will be dealt with and linux may emerge as a major player in the desktop os market.

Windows is my everyday OS. I am very happy to try out Linux and save my $$$ but I will be buying Vista when it ships for wider compatability with games and programs.

I use Windows every day due to Linux's lack of nessecary apps that I need (Photoshop, iTunes, some audio editing utilities) and ATI's support for Linux, which lacks greatly.

I use OSX at home

and I use Windows at work, and a little bit at home (mainly because there is no Mac version of GTA:SA or Half-Life 2)

"Erm, yes, it's my everyday OS. I tried alternatives, but Windows is the best."

I voted for this, but I would rather say I prefer to use Windows than that it "is the best". I prefer Windows essentially because it is what I cut my teeth on and is now familiar. I still want to learn Linux and have it installed on a laptop but I rarely use it. One day....

I'm a *nix guy, but this old piece of trash I've been using since my main box blew up, has win2k on it. (300mhz woo)

Its garbage I hate it.

Where's the "I use windows at work because I have to" option? It doesn't quite fit into the "I have only ever used Windows at work/school" category.

My Answers:

- I use Linux (almost) exclusively at home (no windows, just some other *NIXs).

- I use Solaris terminals at Uni.

- I use Windows 2000 at work becuase I have to (although I was given the option to use 2000 over XP, which is nice). I also work on VxWorks (driver development) at work.

I've used Linux, I've used OS X. I still like Windows the best. I do sort of want an Apple, but it would end up being just an expensive toy.
