I'm never sure whether or not I should tip the hairdresser. My haircut only costs ?8.50 and lasts about 20 mins. I can understand people tipping if they're there all afternoon having highlights, but what do you guys think?

EDIT>: Damn, this was supposed to be a poll :blush::

Tip if you want but don't feel pressured to.. If you truely feel they deserve a tip then give them one. Tipping should never be an obligation.

Unfortunetly its become the standard here in the USA to tip everyone. Say you go into the restraunt and buy a nice meal totaling $75. The waiter/waitress will get about a $12-15 tip for 2 hours work. He's bussing say 4-5 tables and thats about 35/hr. Personally, I hate tipping 15-20% since they are just doing their job, especially if it was just "good" service.

I make $6/hr at the movies, so why am I going to leave 2 hours of my hard earned work when they are already getting paid?

That's what I feel like. I work part time at the checkout to earn spare cash for uni and no-one ever tips me, but I have a mate who works at a restaurant, and she earns less per hour to make up for the extra money she makes in tips.

I rarely tip people unless they actually deserve it i.e. extra good service and hard work. They are paid to do their job and if the income is too small they ought to do something about it

At ?8.50 I'd tip up the the ?10 mark, but that's actually over the odds. A lot of travel guides suggest the UK tip rate should be about 10% (which would be 85p).

That said, I only tip if:

* I like the person

* The service was good

* I shall be returning

Anyone expecting a tip from me (and doing it obviously) get's nothing - that is just rude, and stems down to begging.

I used to work as a waiter, and my tips definately helped - heck I even relied upon them trough Uni life. But as much as I relied upon them, I NEVER expected them. When a customer had the bill, I left them alone and never hovvered around. If they tipped I showed sincere gratitude, but often felt vaguely awkward - I hate dealing with money. I got tipped often though, as I was always polite, etc.

I equally hate when people show off with tips. Like making a grand gesture about giving you a quid. Tips are discretionary so be discreet.

You have it backward about why she makes less money, but anyway, I usually tip the hairdresser $2 - $5. If I don't like the haircut, then I don't tip, but that's rare. It's supposed to be about 15%, though.

it's just a thought...but maybe you shouldn't go out to dinner at places that cost $75 if you're only making minimum wage? *shrug*

I don't tip people who cut my hair :p I am already getting charged more than I think it is worth so there is no way I am putting more to it in a tip...

I always tip. you guys think that if the fee is say $15 for your hair, your hairdresser gets the $15. No, the owner of the salon gets most of that when they aren't doing any of the work. The tips people get go straight in their pocket and make up for all the work they put in.

waiters/waitresses don't have it easy. they deal with rude customers, being on their feet all day, carrying 3 plates in each hand.

tip, don't be cheap.

But the hairdresser's getting paid by the hour, so it's not like she's cutting your hair for free.

My haircuts are flat fees..I don't think ALL get paid on the clock.

Well you see in my family, all the women have been/are waitresses, our family has greatly relied on tips, so when we ourselves go to a restaraunt/barber/etc, we know how it is to be tipped, so we do tip. I've been taught to tip people unless the person was a real ass.

In most cases I will tip, unless I think that the person did a horrible job.

I was eating at Boston Pizza at Whistler once, and the waiter was a real ass. First, our order took 2 hours to arrive, and it wasn't what we ordered. When the proper order arrived (another hour), it was cold. Then when it came time to leave, he made sure to ask us if we left a tip (which we did in the first place, though he didn't deserve it). It really made me feel like taking the tip back when he asked, but I'm too nice I guess.

I never tip hairdressers. To get my head shaved to grade two, it costs ?6.50 at most places I know. Ridiculous.

I do not tip my hairdresser ... all I have is a simple head shave down to a grade 2, quite like Mustard above. And that alone costs quite a lot, so I am not inclined to tip her.

However we have been using the same hairdresser for years - my whole family - so that place must have raked in a few k from us. :rofl:

Why not get some clippers and do it yourself if your have grade 2 all over?

Myself, I don't tip anywhere (in UK).

When in US, I tip when I feel it is appropriate. I don't tip every round at the bar, maybe every 2 depending on the price of the beer. When I go to Vegas in September, and if the beer is the same price at the Slots O Fun ($1.25 for a Bud), then I will tip every round. If the beer is more, I tip every other. And if it costs $6 like it did at Nine Fine Irishmen and Toby Keith's I Love this Bar & Grill, they get nothing.

Hairdressers, I don't tip.

it's not always the case, sometimes it's a percentage of how much money they bring in. hairdressing is not an easy job. arthritis is way too common in the hands because of the scissors, trimmers, and blowdriers. if all you do is get your head shaved, at least a dollar.

I go to 'For Men Only', they have a branch in Williamsport :

Pretty nice place, I try to give the girls as much free reign regarding hair styles as possible. Usually takes about 1/2 hour, and I usually tip $3 or 4 for the $14 or so haircut.

Had some people in from New Zealand who thought tipping was BS, when I mentioned I tipped my hairstyles they thought I was pulling their legs.

Here is what they did to me last time:

(last night before the PJ concert in Camden)

I think its worth it, I enjoy getting something different and unique each time.
