OS X is still better looking than Vista

Recommended Posts

I'm really surprised that an OS that has been around for years is still better looking than a new OS. Compare Vistas Control Panel to OS X Sysrem Preferences. I'n my opinion at least, OS X's System Preferences is much easier on the eyes. You be the judge:

This thread is going to spiral out of control in about 2 minutes.

I prefer the OS X System Preferences to Windows Control Panel because it is easier to see what you want and locate it quickly. But that's just my opinion and something like this depends on a user by user basis, I can see how some people may prefer the Vista way.

I did not post this to start a war or anything. I was just very surprised that after all of this time Microsoft can not come up with a more pleasing GUI. Perhaps I should have titles this topic differently but the bottom line is that OS X years old as it is is still a better looking OS IMO.

Mac OS X System Preferences is even cooler when doing a Spotlight search:

Plus all preferences are being displayed in a single window where Windows Vista's control panel has numerous smaller windows that pop-open. At least that used to be the case, maybe that changed in the latest build?

That's probably because Mac OS X and it's Aqua interface is being updated on a more frequent basis than Windows. The current 10.4 Tiger Aqua version is very different from the one featured in Mac OS X' initial release 10.0 Cheetah.

Oh yeah.

I prefer the OS X way, mainly because it's cleaner, more organised, Windows seems to be shooting for "most icons in a window" record.

That's not very fair. AS anyone with vista will perhaps show, the screenshot you showed is using classic view.

This, if anything, shows an advantage of vista. You can have it look pretty as OSX does, but also have it funtional. While both the new vista and osx system menus are pretty, it takes multiple clicks, and you need to know which category certain preferences are in. On vista, you can switch to classic, the screenshot you've posted, and pick exactly what you want. Function over style or style over function... in Vista you can pick both. Though, as mentioned above, the icons *do* need replacing, which will probably be done before RC1.

Unlike the Control Panel's category view, System Preferences' category view will show all preferences panes at all times. Or you can set it to sort alphabetically and have something similar to Control Panel's classic view.

OS X's GUI is good and I agree. But I like Vista's equallly too. OSX is just annoying to operate. There is no way you can maximize a window with 1 click. You gotta drag the hell out of the window before its at the size you want it. And honestly, the only thing that attracts me to OSX is the security and nothing else. I find it quite annoying to use honestly.

some of the vista icons look better than the mac ones.

but the layout of the mac one is better... when the control panel for vista is not in classic mode it looks far less cluttered.

Practically every Mac OS X window has a minimize button like on Windows, so I'm not sure what you're on about.

Pressing the middle (orange) button will minimize the window with a single click...

OS Looks dont last that long, i can change the theme in XP and forget about it. I dont go "oh that looks nice" everytime when i turn on my computer. Does looks matter or functionally for the user?

Theming Windows XP or Vista won't change the layout of the Control Panel...

Microsoft just needs to call in some 3rd-party visual design specialists or something, because on a whole, Vista looks like hammered sh*t. The control panel is just an extension of a much larger problem; there is just too much crap *everywhere* in Vista. It looks like an unorganized mess.

I personally find the Windows maximize functionality very annoying. Why would I want an app to take all the screen space? Its a waste and sort of defeats the purpose of multitasking.

I would much rather have the app take as much screen real estate as the content demands.
