Russian TV Show to Offer Space Station Visit as Prize

Russia's ORT television channel and the Russian space agency Rosaviakosmos signed an agreement in Moscow Tuesday to televise a contest whose winner will fly to the International Space Station.

The first flight is planned for the fall of next year.

Russia's Interfax news agency quotes ORT's press release as saying that before the winner is chosen all contestants will train for space flight in a series of TV programs showing the audience how cosmonauts are trained and space launches prepared.

The series will be filmed at the Star City, a training center for cosmonauts outside Moscow.

Russia's space program is desperately strapped for cash. In the past, the space agency has offered a trip to the space station aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket to civilians who can pay a $20 million fee.

U.S. businessman Dennis Tito and South African Mark Shuttleworth have been so-called "space tourists."
