Brandon
I have been an avid firefox user since the .6 days. Due to the memory leak and hogging of system resources, I need to move to somthing different. (NOT IE). On my laptop (Pentium M 1.4/600mhz 512MB RAM) firefox is constantly using 100% CPU usage with over 3 tabs open and causes my entire system to be sluggish when running. I'm running 1.5.0.4. Yes this is firefox, when i open taskman, it shows firefox as 200+MB ram and 95-100% CPU I need- Tabs security minimalism suggestions? I'm still using firefox on my desktop though :p

TFindley
yup. Opera :D to be honest you'll find that most browsers now are based either on Mozilla (Mozilla, Firefox, Flock etc) or IE (IE, Maxthon, AOL Browser etc). Deployed Opera 9 on every machine here. great alternative to IE. Faster, more secure, and more stable than IE and Firefox. I think its CPU / Mem requirements are less too. I also run it on my IBM Thinkpad R51 (Centrino 1.4ghz (1mb cache) / 512mb RAM). never had a problem with it on there :)

mAcOdIn Veteran Posted July 12, 2006 Veteran Share Posted July 12, 2006 Opera is just as heavy as firefox. What do you mean by security? As far as IE is concerned it's biggest problem was it's ancient JVM and ActiveX and with mozilla/gecko browsers it'd be Java. Javascript is an issue on both but in my opinion really pretty minor. If you mean security as all encompassing then you have no choice but to get the big three, IE, Opera, or Firefox, however you could consider an older version of firefox or mozilla and still be fairly safe if you keep your Java up to date and don't fall for phishing tactics. But firefox is probably taking that much ram because of plugins. Do you have a plugin that has to do with tabs? Maybe session saver is enabled, that's a pretty big ram eater right there. I'm also really likeing the Bon Echo firefox beta they've got, seems faster and more responsive on my machine.

As security, I'm probably reffering to the old days, when surfing with IE6 you could pick up spyware all over, while with firefox i have never gotten anything of that nature. Quactaur
You could try k-meleon. Same engine as firefox, but much much lighter.
bangbang023 Veteran Posted July 12, 2006 Veteran Share Posted July 12, 2006 You could try k-meleon. Same engine as firefox, but much much lighter. I was going to mention k-meleon, also. Very light browser.
Brandon
Okay, I'm tryin k-meleon. seems pretty sweet. 2 things - how do i get rid of all these extra buttons (email, zoom etc) -- also, how do i have when i middle click for a new tab to keep focus on the current tab? msing
Opera is not as heavy as firefox. I constantly use both browsers on my crappy computer so don't call me biased. Opera is one of the fastest browsers out there. The only other browser that starts up just as quick would be IE6.
Slimy
I would have to say ie6, opera or k-meleon
Quillz
I'd also recommend Opera. IIRC, Opera was created for Windows, whereas Firefox was originally made for Linux and ported to Windows. (This doesn't really mean anything, just something I read.)

dragon2611
I'd say there's something wrong with your setup. You blame FF too quickly IMO. Id say theres something you've got installed is screwing it up, perhaps some extension or your profile got corrupted. ive ran firefox on a p3 700 with 256mb ram and not had the problem. Also opera does seem slightly faster in some cases.
