World Firefox Day

Recommended Posts

There's a new 'mouth-to-mouth' Firefox campaign, on this website.

The idea is simple: you enter the information of a friend on the website, together with your information. A mail is sent to that friend, asking him/her to download Firefox.

If he/she does this before September 15th, both your names are added to the source of Firefox 2!

The idea will be implemented as follows:

How will our names be included in Firefox 2?

If both you and your friend opt-in to have your names included, we?ll add your names to an interactive Firefox friends display that will be accessible from within Firefox 2.

For people wondering about a thing like this 'bloating' Firefox: an idea like this will (if done right) not increase Firefox memory usage, as the names are only loaded if the 'friends display is opened.

It will however add a bit to the size of the Firefox executable to be downloaded from the Mozilla website.

Nice idea and all, but completely useless. Imagine how many 1000s of names you'll have to go through before finding yours and your friends. Just seems completely pointless.

Entirely true, but it was the same thing with the NYT ad, and it was still very popular.

Trying to shove Firefox down people's throats eh?

No thanks, I'll just uninstall Firefox on every PC instead.

It's called advertising.

Why is that 'Shoving it down people's throats'?

Then again, seeing your signature about web standards, I doubt I'll be able to change your opinion

I like FF and use it as my main browser, but this is crap. It's one thing to put a FF link/image in your sig, it's another to proclaim "world firefox day". It seems like a small portion of the FF using population has turned it into a religion. They seem to feel the need to spread their beliefs to the unbelievers (hallowed are the ori). I'd go so far as to compare these people to the extremist muslims and christians, and it's giving the rest of us a bad name.

Oh come on now. If the names were placed on a gigantic page on Mozilla's server it'd make more sense. But jacking up Firefox's install size for the sake of adding names?

These aggressive Firefox advertising campaigns are starting to get a bit out of hand.

@MrA: your last sentence in your comment says it all.

If it's a text document or a HTML page, there's always CTRL+F. ;)

 Trolling is unwelcome.

I agree with those that think this is pointless and over the top.

Care to elaborate?

I'm not sure I know what you're talking about...

I believe it's called sarcasm, hence "I believe Mozilla did something stupid"

I would be really ticked if my friends were giving out my email address to Mozilla or any other company.

I agree, and I'm posting this from Firefox.

That shows how lame you are. Firefox is not asking everyone to download. They are just advertising making people know about the browser.

Thanks, your comment really contributed to the thread. And FYI, people don't complain because websites aren't compliant, they complain because they get their website working perfectly in Firefox or Opera, and then everything is screwed up in Safari and Internet Explorer. I understand people who support browsers, even supporters of IE, but people who directrly say "Remove Firefox" just get on my nerves. It's disrespectful to the developers, and it goes against people's freedom of choice.

On the topic of the thread, interesting idea, but the source code will be HUGE! It'll add at least a megabyte, and 2.0 is already getting pretty big.

They are fixing an issue found with the site, they passworded the site while they are working on it.

Note that this doesn't add anything to compiled Firefox, the names will be commented out in the source. I believe the names will be stored on a Mozilla website that will be linked to in Firefox.
