XerXis
She lost her resume, her applications, and other personal files. It won't take long for her to reload softwares and clean out junks, but her resume and documents are irreplaceable.I know there are recovery softwares she can try to retrieve files, but I don't know if they'll still work after a complete image of the hard drive. Perhaps some of her files are still intact, but I think luck's not on her side. my sympathy for her, but you should always make a backup of important documents, almost everyone has a usb stick nowadays, use it

Ashiaveli
they dunno anything about anything. i've been waiting for my old laptop to be fixed for 4 months now. they got around the 60 days thing (if it takes longer than 60 days, they replace it) by giving it back to me before 60 days broken. i took it home, it wouldnt start up so i took it back and they sent it back for another 2 months. benac
I thought it was pretty much common knowledge by now. I wouldn't trust anyone to "fix" my PC while leaving my personal files, website designs, etc. all there in the open and without a backup. On another note, Does anyone else find it suspect how Best Buy just happens to use that receipt paper+ink that seems to "vanish" weeks later. I've lost a few things to Best Buy because my receipt had faded to a plain piece of white paper. Just wondering if they have some sort of policy or has anyone else noticed this? DotChris
Geek Squad is terrible. My neighbor called them out and they charged her $80 to evaluate the machine and and wanted to charge $100 more to restore the pc, she said no and was suggested to restore the pc to manufactors state. I went over there and come to find out it was just booted in safe mode. I ran a temp file cleaner and restarted the pc and it was fixed. Geek Squad is worthless. Bestbuy isnt much better and like to screw pll over. I got a PC from them last Christmas. The ad was marked $575 and the sale was still valid. When they ring it up they try to charge me $750 and gave me some bull that the sale ended early. I went there last week and bought a M$ Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 and pickup a new pc for my moms bf and they try to offer extended Geek Squad. I told them what had happen to my neighbor and they like you must be wrong, our guys would never do that. I looked him in the eyes and said "Well they did and I will never call them for help unless I want to pay for service that I dont get. I think this post is long enough. So I ll end it now. ;) -Chris
Litespeed
I work for the Geek Squad. Bullet point number 10 on the disclaimer you sign when you drop something off for service states that we aren't responsible for lost/corrupted/stolen data. I would NEVER assume a customer had made a backup. Geez, ghost the drive and you're sweet.
diggler007
Is backing up data the user's responsibility? It sure is. However wiping the entire drive to replace the cd-rom is freaking crazy. Who does something like this? Somebody who knows next to nothing about computer repair. I don't care if it does say that GeekSquad is not responsible for data loss, the fact that either them or a 3rd party doesn't know that all you have to do is plug in a new drive is insane. Its called plug and play!!!! Get a clue GeekSquad!! You guys suck. :x

Rudnartim
If Best Buy backed up data for everyone if the didnt expressly want it they could be sued for invasion of privacy and the sort, and who knows if she really said anything about don't clear my harddrive I mean unless you were there when she turned it in who knows what was said. ANd i've had harddrives clear themselves just from going bad in between shutdown and startup, friends comp did that and had to reinstall everything , so things like that do happen before you all go jumping on best buys ****, to be honest i dont know why this is even a topic, whoopdy (insert f word here) do, your friend lost data lets make a public announcment about it. Joel
if they had to reinstall windows xp just to have the cdrom fixed then BB realy need to employ some people who know what they are doing. It's a question of resources and cost. It costs less to spend the time re-imaging the drive than to spend 6 hours troubleshooting the problem. This is true in countless corporate IT departments.
