Jelly2003
I was just wondering how I scan a PC's hard drive for bad sectors on Linux? Is there some software available, or is it built in? Thanks
metal_dragen Veteran Posted August 3, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 3, 2006 It should be included in most distros' default package layout. If you are using ext2/3, then the command you want is e2fsck.
Jelly2003
Yea, basically I am fixing a relative's PC, they're running Win XP Home SP2, and I've booted with an Ubuntu Live CD to try and scan their hard drive. I've actually been to Seagate's web site and they have a tool that you can burn onto a bootable CD, so I've burned it onto a CDRW and am now scanning the hard drive. Thanks anyways, I'll remember your advice when I need to run a scan on an ext file system.
markwolfe Veteran Posted August 4, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 4, 2006 I would recommend using Microsoft's tools to scan and repair Windows NTFS filesystems.
