HDD bad sector scan + recover

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering how I scan a PC's hard drive for bad sectors on Linux?

Is there some software available, or is it built in?

Thanks

It should be included in most distros' default package layout. If you are using ext2/3, then the command you want is e2fsck.

Yea, basically I am fixing a relative's PC, they're running Win XP Home SP2, and I've booted with an Ubuntu Live CD to try and scan their hard drive.

I've actually been to Seagate's web site and they have a tool that you can burn onto a bootable CD, so I've burned it onto a CDRW and am now scanning the hard drive.

Thanks anyways, I'll remember your advice when I need to run a scan on an ext file system.

I would recommend using Microsoft's tools to scan and repair Windows NTFS filesystems.
