Barney T. Administrators Posted August 9, 2006 Administrators Share Posted August 9, 2006 SuSE is a great distro, but so is Mandriva, Ubuntu, Fedora, and a whole host of others. Look at this thread: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=416313 You can also go to Distrowatch for links to many Linux distro reviews and download sites. You might want to try a Live CD first to see what the selected distribution is all about, before you install it to your hard drive. Barney

Ryster
Then you need to boot from the CD I would assume. Reboot your PC with the CD in the drive. If the CD doesn't boot, you may need to alter the boot order in your BIOS settings.
Barney T. Administrators Posted August 10, 2006 Administrators Share Posted August 10, 2006 And, you need to make sure that you burn the .iso file as an image, not simply copy it to a blank CD. Then place it in your CD and reboot, making sure that your CD-ROM is the first boot device in your boot order in your BIOS. Barney

Barney T. Administrators Posted August 11, 2006 Administrators Share Posted August 11, 2006 Hey, I have tried Suse10.1 live dvd.. all kinds of problems.. i cant use the xgl 3d crap.. cant use wifi... its a mess.. 8th time i have tried linux and it failed. :/ Did you post any questions to see if someone here could help? Live CDs / DVDs are sometimes problematic because they do not always have all of the drivers that you'll need, compared to the install CD that can get them from the various repos. Many have installed XGL without issues. More info on your specific problem could have solved the problem (unless it is an incompatible card). Fozzieb
Linux will not work with all hardware out of the box, most people will need to do a bit of tweaking to get it ALL working.
.Ark
so what tweaking should i do ?
markwolfe Veteran Posted August 11, 2006 Veteran Share Posted August 11, 2006 Is the 855GM your graphics set? Seems that there is a bug filed on this. Bottom of this page has the link (which I cannot follow due to https restrictions where I work) http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs#Driver_Issues

Fozzieb
Try another distro live CD, see if that works. If so you know it is just a SUSE issue. I had problems with my laptop under Gnopixx back when it was around but under gentoo it worked fine. Give Ubuntu a go
.Ark
LoL.. Remember I said linux messed up 7 times before.. 4 times was ubuntu
betamaxman
Correction, you messed up something. not linux, or failed to do something during the install. Don't feel bad most of us do even after we have installed nix several times, most all problems can be traced to a miss configuration some place. I suggest you forget about xgl and other hyped things for the moment and first get a working system up and running. Try this distro out. http://www.pclinuxos.com/page.php?6 But if worse comes to worse there is always windows.
.Ark
Okay! I got Suse 10 up and running.. just 2 issues i would like to fix.. Dual boot with windows (installed on second parition) and get WIFI fixed! I dont care about xgl anymore.
