Mouldy Punk
I'm currently using ubuntu with gnome and am using XGL+Compiz etc. If I just install fluxbox from the repos, will XGL work in it? And will there be any sort of clashes between gnome and fluxbox being installed side by side?
Kreuger
You'll have no problem running flux and gnome on a machine. As far as I know, XGL is only for gnome and kde.
mitch00
No it won't work. Gnome is a Dekstop Environment. What that means is it is a set of applications working together to create a full dekstop. This includes a Window Manager, a Panel among other things. To get Gnome (or KDE) to use XGL, it replaces Gnome's official Window Manager (Metacity) with Compiz. Compiz is what gives you all the fancy effects. Now in comes Fluxbox which is also just a Window Manager, that can be used either stand alone or as Gnome's Window Manager. So you see, Compiz may replace Fluxbox, but then you wouldn't be using FLux any more, it's either one or the other.
Mouldy Punk
Right, so installing fluxbox would seriously mess up my XGL+Compiz+Gnome setup? How could I get a sort of minimal setup like fluxbox and still have compiz and gnome as a seperate option when I log in?
Tiftof
You can have XGL as possible session instead of starting it after logging in. In this tutorial for being able to run opengl apps on xgl/compiz, there is also some explanation on how to start xgl as a session.
mitch00
Mouldy Punk, installing Fluxbox would not mess anything up I think you misunderstood what I meant. You may install Fluxbox along side your XGL+Compiz+Gnome, it's just they won't be working together. You may log into a Fluxbox session or a XGL+Compiz+Gnome session. Just apt-get install fluxbox (or whatever the equivalent is on your machine) and when you log in using GDM select Fluxbox as the session type. Just no fancy effects in Fluxbox :). Mouldy Punk
Ah, thanks for that mitch00. There's no way to make fluxbox work with XGL though? Tiftof, thanks for the link. I already have a similar thing setup though I think.
mitch00
I highly doubt it. From what I understand XGL is just the underlying technology, and Compiz itself does all the fancy effects. Fluxbox wasn't built for this purpose and you cant be using both at once it doesn't really work. Sorry =/
Roby718
I am typing this in an installation like this: xcompmgr+transset+conkty+fluxbox
markwolfe Veteran Posted June 25, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 25, 2008 I am typing this in an installation like this: xcompmgr+transset+conkty+fluxbox Huh? Are you posting with an issue regarding fluxbox? or xcompmgr? or conky? Or just letting us know you use those?
Fish
I'm pretty sure xcompmgr can be used with fluxbox, although I've read it can conflict with Conky and sometimes cause problems with your menu. There may be patches/workarounds.
markwolfe Veteran Posted June 25, 2008 Veteran Share Posted June 25, 2008 Ahhh, I see. I remember something about conky having problems when used with xcompmgr. Your memory is better than mine, it seems. ;)
