Laptop battery

Recommended Posts

I use my laptop alot - 90% of time it's connected to the AC, will my battery suffer?

Or is it better to remove the battery from laptop while connected to the AC?

Some people say it is better, others say it doesn't make a difference. I personally remove the battery when I'm using the AC, and then completely drain and re-charge every couple of months.

I personally unplug the battery - mainly because it makes the laptop lighter :).

I ALSO discharge it until it runs out (i use a linux live cd and ignore the low battery warnings), so that its totally whacked, and then recharge it fully before using it.

At the moment i have the battery out, because i have it on my lap, and its lighter - but its really down to what you believe.

I think it does make a diffrence, i had my acer ferrari 4000 plugged in with the battery almost 24/7 for over 6 months, the battery lasted for 3hours 15mins when i first got it (on lowest screen brightness) now after a full charge it only lasts for about 2:45. I just take the battery out when im using it at home.

You could just leave it in the BIOS config screen ;)

Btw. there is a program that says how much is "battery worn out"

MobileMeter, I think

on my laptop it says "56%" - that's bad - I think it has sometihg with high temperature of my laptop while it's working on AC

lithium batteries wear out even WITHOUT use

they should be discharged once or twice a month

about removing them from the laptop while in AC mode, i've been said that its safer to remove, even if it's just to take it away from the laptop heat

If it was plugged into an A/C socket, would it really matter if it was heavy :p you cant exaclty move around with it.

I usually keep the battery in my Dell Inspiron 2650. It used to have a 3 hour life, or something like that. Now it's barely an hour life. :( I've had it for a few years though, so that could explain it.

Not really. Most people replace a laptop battery at about a year or so.

I've had my laptop for just over a year. I've always (except recently, out of laziness) taken the battery out when it's fully charged and I'm running on AC power, and I've still got pretty good battery life. Not as good as when I got it, but a lot better than my old laptop did after a few months of usage--I didn't take the battery out of it.

If any part of your laptop gets hot while it's running from things like gaming or heavy CPU stuff, there's no question that you should remove it since batteries don't like heat.

Also, I take my battery out when I don't need it because laptop manufacturers don't recommend leaving the battery at fullest charge when its being charged, so I wouldn't leave it like so in my laptop when it's on AC.

  • 6 months later...

My last laptop's battery is dead, it died very quickly...

It lasted like half an hour after like a year, so I started completely discharging and recharging it, then it died completely.

Now, laptop is 3 years old, it doesn't last a second.

Now with my new laptop, I remove the battery when I don't use it, and try to work using the battery one day in the weekend (at least twice a month).

I don't completely drain it, windows hibernates, but it still has some charge. Then I recharge it and once recharged remove it.

I find this to be quiet effective.

The laptop is now nearly half a year old and I still have 100% battery time.

(So that's the road I'm staying on :))

Moral of the story: Remove the battery when you don't use it, but still use it regularly.

EDIT: omg, I just noticed how old this topic is...
