Simon Veteran Posted September 4, 2006 Veteran Share Posted September 4, 2006 (edited) I have been working lately on a new way to manage Shift Linuxes wallpapers. The wallpaper thread has been relatively difficult to navigate and use, so I thought I'd create a more oroganized way. Today, I bring you Shift Presentation Management v0.1 alpha 1. This minimal featured release does the most basic thing possible: it uploads a file, a preview file, a title, and a description, then displays it on the front page. It doesn't do much, but it will do more. http://www.shiftlinux.net/art In this release... You can upload wallpapers, GNOME, KDE, and Fluxbox themes, icon sets, bootscreens, splash screens, etc. by choosing the respective category when uploading. You can view everyone elses submissions on one page Rate other peoples content Comments Full pages for each ebtry (to display comments, ratings, etc.) Front page containing highest rated content Ability to upload icon sets and Gnome themes Search "Sort by" options Official Shift Linux website branding Subcategories In a future release (very soon, hopefully) It's a secret now :p I hate to release something half-baked, and this is much less than that, but I wanted to see the reaction from you guys. To upload: Click login on the sidebar, and log in to your Neowin account The login link is replaced by an "Upload a contribution" link. Click it. In the box that appears, upload the wallpaper in the first box, a preview with a height of 500px in the second box, a title in the third box, and a description in the fourth. You will automatically have your username inserted as the author. Click "Submit query" Look over the info. If your file has the same name as someone elses, the upload won't be successful. Go to the main page and make sure your upload worked by checking the preview image, and click the preview image to see the fuull size. To see other people's walls: Click the preview image. This is a proof of concept, and is likely buggy. I want to know taht it works right, so the next release is a good one. Thanks! EDIT: Updated on October 30 at 10:00 PM GMT, see list above for list of features now enabled. Also included: new theme. EDIT2: Figured I'd fix this thread up a little bit; a bit outdated. A new release is also on its way. Edited July 28, 2007 by simon360

Simon Veteran Posted September 7, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted September 7, 2006 I've fixed a couple of bugs, and a few releases have gone without notice... Anyway, any wallpaper that you made which you want to be included in the distro should go in this system.. This is for organizational purposes, and so that people can vote what will be included. Also, try and test out some of the features. Promote a few wallpapers, and leave some comments. That's what these features are here for. PM me with any problems. Simon Veteran Posted September 11, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted September 11, 2006 The progress on the dev site is incredible, and the next release will be able to handle themes and will have the rating system fixed (it's severely flawed right now). A note that all promotions will be reset with this release because of the issues which give an unfair advantage to some entries. Comments will remain, you'll just have to go through and promote your favorites again, and you'll only be able to vote once!! This may seem unnessecairy, but the entries with the most promotions will likely be included with the distro; accuracy is important. If anyone has objections to that, you can either PM me or leave a message here. I have, however, been having trouble setting up ImageMagick to be accessible from PHP. Anyone know what I have to do? I'm on PHP 5.1, and I am on Ubuntu. PHP was not compiled from source. I'd also like to let you guys know that I'm going to start working on an edit feature soon for both comments and entries, and enable multiple downloads. For the next release, entries will not be sorted into categories (wallpaper, bootsplash, icons, themes...), but that's another thing I'm going to work on. After those features are finished, plus ImageMagick, Sort By, and Search, the system will be technically complete. I don't know what you guys think, but for only one week, I think this has come pretty far!
Simon Veteran Posted September 12, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted September 12, 2006 New update is up, there was quite a bit of downtime however because of major changes to the database. Please re-vote for your favorite entrie(s), and leave comments! This is a big release; things will need to be tested. I give you version 0.2! Oh, and before submitting things, please read the guide linked from the sidebar! It contains important information.

Mouldy Punk
Slight bug...the site looks bloody awful in IE6 (don't know about 7) :p By the way, I'd like to help it in some way with shift linux, so I'm offering my services :p I can help out with this site if you like. I've been experienced with PHP (with MySQL, GD etc) for a few years now so hopefully I will be able to help you speed things along a bit if you need help. gigapixels Veteran Posted September 12, 2006 Veteran Share Posted September 12, 2006 Looks good, but you should make it so that a thumbnail is created (through ImageMagick or some other PHP class) so that the thumbnails that we see aren't the full images, and in turn it will use less bandwidth. Simon Veteran Posted September 13, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted September 13, 2006 Looks good, but you should make it so that a thumbnail is created (through ImageMagick or some other PHP class) so that the thumbnails that we see aren't the full images, and in turn it will use less bandwidth. I'm working on that, but for uploads since about last Tuesday (one week ago), you haven't been allowed to use the same image for preview and full-size; you get a message saying "Please use a different image". I tried pretty hard to get ImageMagick set up for this release, but I couldn't get it done. I'll go fix those spelling mistakes :D
Sam
Use GD ;) PHPThumb (google it) can do thumbnails easily.
Simon Veteran Posted October 30, 2006 Author Veteran Share Posted October 30, 2006 Everyone brace themselves for a massive upgrade! Tomorrow (hopefully), the list of TODO's will be empty, plus a few more new features (pagination and categories). It needs a bit of tweaking, and there's some preperation to do, but this update will be good, and will give this system a 1.0 Beta 1 name. It's not feature frozen yet, but it's at quite a high standard. Neither ImageMagick nor GD will be used, since it's now preferred you make your own preview image under 300KB, and because nothing will happen if you put a .tar.gz file through it... Get your stuff ready, this will be a major release that will be important for developing Shift 90.5, so we can get branding finished. And non-graphics people, vote for your favorite items, so the art that goes into this thing will be awesome AND what people want.
