Hidden features inside Xbox 360?

Recommended Posts

I think 1080P would be a feature of an HDMI cable add-on, not a software update.

A few ideas off the top of my head (just guesses, I have no idea what they're actually talking about):

- DVD upscaling (over non-VGA connections). Unlikely because I think the industry has standardized on only allowing this over HDMI connections and not component.

- Video playback over WMC.

- Additional codec support for MCX

- Something to do with Zune

- Some kind of compatibility / emulation of another console (besides the original Xbox)

- Video playback over WMC.

full featured MCE instead of the extender and support for the DirecTV IP network...

- Something to do with Zune

you can plug Zune into a special cradle on the 360 and use it as a portable HDD that you can take over to your friend's place for LAN parties and some additional Live Anywhere features... :omg:

- Some kind of compatibility / emulation of another console (besides the original Xbox)

Dreamcast 360! here comes Peter's lil baby ready to kick some arses... :shifty:

Wait, so as of right now, DVD upscaling on the 360 only occurs when using a VGA connection? Doesn't work over Component?

If anything?

An Xbox Live update to enable Live Anywhere, with the IM and the talking and the 0wnage!

Or...

Final Fantasy XIII :D

FFXIII on the 360 will never happen, not while Sony have anything todo with it, sure the 360 did get FFXI but that one was different (mainly cause it was a MMORPG :p) while I'd love to see a proper FF on the 360 (as in not a MMORPG) it's not gonna happen, it's as likely as MS anouncing Halo 3 will launch on the 360 and PS3 (and we all know that will never happen :p)

I also think it's probally the Xbox Live Anywhere thing. Also (this is wishful thinking) perhaps they will release that update that allows more media centre functionality on XPSp2 machines (which I beleive was rumored awhile ago), cause right now unless you got MCE all you can do is stream your music and pictures and I know a lot of people kicked a stink about not been able todo video as well using XPSp2...just some thoughts

How about some real speculation because the jokes are getting old. I agree with what Brandon Live mentioned. To add to his "list" -- ATi said DirectX 10 would be achievable on the Xbox 360 through a software update via XBL.

Actually that's way off. Halo 3 is a Microsoft game. FF is not a Sony game. I don't think a "proper" FF game will happen soon (unless Microsoft buys Square or something), but I think it will happen eventually once PS3 bombs.

I think you mean video over WMC, which was in my list above. The 360 can already do video over MCE, but not over WMC.

Yeah only occurs through VGA at the moment

Video steaming from PC is rumoured to work in next Xbox update (Fall) since the release of WMP11.

I don't really see any reference to an officialy announced/admitted 'hidden feature' inside the Xbox 360. The link to the Xbox Forums on the originating post for this thread simply has some guy asking what people think the hidden feature is, no link to any news or otherwise indicating that this is anything but a rumor.... ?

I remember back before launch someone from Microsoft mentioned they have a few things in store for when the PS3 and "Revolution" were launched, but I figured it would be something simpler like the bi-annual updates.

For my crazy speculation, I choose....Halo HD (online only) with all the Halo 1 & 2 maps, plus a handful of brand new maps included on every x360 HDD! That'll explain some of that missing space. ;) :p

You are correct, but Sony owns a large amount of shares in Square-Enix I beleive, so they do have some control over them. MS can't just buy Square-Enix for the above stated reasons (or can they?), only way MS could take control is buying Sony out (as in thier shares in the company, not buy Sony themselves :p), which I doubt will happen (but then again it might, I don't think anyone saw Nintendo selling Rare coming) Also I think Sony has tried to buy Square (before the merger with Enix) but it failed (but I could be wrong there).

A "proper" FF is happening soon, FFXII (PS2 - well if ever gets released or gets bumped to PS3) and FFXIII (PS3)..so there is already 2 in the works.

Well if the PS3 kicks the bucket, the chances of 360 getting a "proper" FF are still slim (don't forget the 360 bombed in Japan, they ain't gonna support a console willingly that isn't doing well (in Japan)...unless MS offer some huge cash incentive or something :p) if anything, if the PS3 bombs we might see some more FF on the Nintendo Wii (as they already shown interest in developing games for Nintendo again) but that is only what I think so take with a grain of salt :p

Only video pirates want to stream movies...

You can't really force video playback over WMC, the app was never meant for it. MS knows that adding the feature just means more movie pirates and piracy is something they've been fighting for a while.

I just hope that they have group chat sometime. And maybe a bigger HDD.

Huh? WMC supports video. Of course it's meant for it. That's the whole idea.

I think he was talking about a proper FF for the Xbox 360. ;)

And if the PS3 somehow bombed, SE could still sell 4 - 5 million copies of FF outside of Japan. Sure, Nintendo would have a better chance of getting all the new FF titles (as long as SE doesn't mind going back to 480p), but if there were no more FF and DQ titles coming to the PS3 but new titles were coming out for the 360, I'm sure quite a few Japanese gamers would make the switch. Not that any of this is likely to happen, lol.

By that logic, why would video streaming be supported in MCE then?

Oh, right, that's not the reason why WMC doesn't support video streaming...
