Censors clear GTA: Vice City

THE censorship board has cleared PlayStation 2 game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for release after the distributor agreed to remove scenes with prostitutes from the game.

Take 2 Interactive managing director James Ellingford said he was "ecstatic" the game had secured an MA15+ rating, the highest permissible in Australia.

There is no R18+ rating for games, so those that do not meet the standards for MA15+ are banned.

Last year, the Office of Film and Literature Classification refused classification for Take 2's Grand Theft Auto 3 because the game allowed the player to kill a prostitute after having sex with her and this fell foul of guidelines prohibiting sexual violence.

The rules banning sexual violence in entertainment are so overriding, it's likely the unaltered game would have been banned even with an R18+ category in place.

After the OFLC decision in November last year, Take 2 pulled GTA 3 from the shelves and released an edited version without the prostitutes in January. The game is still one of Inform's top 10 sellers.

Mr Ellingford said Take 2 had also removed the prostitutes from GTA: Vice City, but there would be no other changes.

"As with the previous version, we needed to make the same change, but it's seven seconds from a 250-hour-plus game," he said. "It's certainly not primary school, but the rest of the game is fairly tame."

Mr Ellingford said the game would launch on November 29 and he expected to ship 100,000 copies on the first day, with 30 per cent of the day-one quota sold on pre-order.

In the GTA games, the player is a gangster who carjacks vehicles, shoots people and performs jobs for crime bosses. Vice City is set in a Miami-like city in the 1980s.

wow this is a first for AUS, they are usually so tight over this stuff

Yes. I'm surprised they have agreed to let this one through. Good stuff. It would be a shame for us to miss out on this game. It looks so fun! :D
