Chad
There are viruses for every operating system, there's just no where near as many for Unix based systems as there are for Windows. Norton ftl There are no viruses for OS X...not yet. As he said, Norton AV for Mac prevents you from passing along Windows viruses to pc users. While they may not affect OS X, they will affect the pc if sent via email, Word doc, etc.
rajputwarrior
My department provides Symantec and Norton for any student who wants it and it's amazing how some people just have to have an AV on the Mac, I tell them there are no viruses and it just doesn't really sink in for some reason, because they usually just ramble on about needing to be protected (from....?). Dr. Ruth always says use protection, never know when something could happen (except Norton is useless)

benderthefender
hi. i use norton nav for my quad pmac g5. how much of a performance hit is it? i mean i cant see the difference before i installed nav and now i have nav (been using it now for a couple of months) im quite happy. but as someone earlier said, for window users anti virus is a must! no esstiential right. i moved from windows to the mac about a year ago so the first thing i thought about was anti virus and if i need one. is there any point for me to keep running nav? will my macs run better, i use alot of logic pro 7, fcp, aperture, photoshop, lightwave and xcode, netbeans will i see improvement in speed for these apps. what about other solutions like Sophos Anti-Virus? again any point for anti virus for macs? Chad
hi. i use norton nav for my quad pmac g5. how much of a performance hit is it? Idling in the background, it uses next to nothing. No more than your mail, browser, im app. People blow it up and make it sound worse than it is. With that machine, you certainly won't see a performance increase if you stop using it. I use it to protect my friends and family from anything that may be sent to me. It's caught windows viruses on more than one occasion on my machine. Ojushminald
Okay i dont get it. Mac says don't have virus and yet they have the new anti-virus Norton for Mac and ppl say u can get it. this makes NO sense... what the hell...? As it has already been said - no matter what os you are using, it's better to be confident you are safe. For understandable reasons, Macs don't really get so much viruses as PCs do, what's more, I heard, there are only trojans for os x, but still install a firewall (e.g. Protemac Netmine) at least. Subject Delta
It is possible to get mac Trojans from malware placed into warez'd products like Photoshop, and you can still download Windows viruses to a mac, and although they can't really do any damage it is still better to remove them. If any Apple user tells you it is impossible to infect or compromise a mac, they are a liar, but on the other hand antivirus software isn't really necessary.
