IE7.0 RTM vs Firefox 2.0/1.5 & Opera

Recommended Posts

I know this is going to sound like a fanboy but as a webdev it makes me sick to have to cater to IE CSS issues. I switched to firefox back in the 1.0 days and still use it. Currently running the RC 3 of 2.0 and its the best version yet and about memory.. you cant expect a major app to use anything under 30 mb of ram. The new firefox only uses 35-45 MB of ram for me compared to 55-65 with IE 6(havent tried IE7 cause i promised myself never to go back).

IE7 seems a bit glitchy - I can't actually see a difference, but it seems to run less smoothly than firefox. I just feel a little bit cautious and antsy when im using it.

The installation ran smoothly (albeit slow) on my 2.8GHz P4 with 1GB ram.

I probably will switch back to Firefox 2.0 RC3 if IE7 does not meet my standards in the next week or so.

P.S. welcome to Neowin littlerippappa (weird long name that is hard to spell)

I am using opera, which doesn't use much RAM at all. I haven't run into many incompatibilities lately, so I very rarely change to IE7 to do anything unless I am watching a Media Player Video (which for somereason I can't get to work in Vista/Opera). Opera is faster than both browsers, imo, and pages just load so much faster. The downloads are faster than both FF and IE7 plus, I like the download manager in opera better than FF. I love the widgets in Opera, I use them all the time and hope that they will get better and there will be some more coming soon. So basically over all Opera suits ALL of my needs and I will support Opera all of the way.

IE7 is improved, but there are still far too many problems with it that I cannot excuse as a web designer/developer. Sure they "fixed" a few things and added proper PNG support, but that's it.

IE7 is copy of firefox 1.5.

And firefox got all it's ideas from other browsers. The only thing innovative about Firefox is spell checking, about:config and clear private data.

BOTH... IE7 and FF2, i like the recover from crash with FF2 (and wished it was the same under IE7). But i like to use them equally the same, the favorite center in IE7 is better, i wished there were some filtering when viewing resized pictures (but i can live without it).

[OT]They both share the same troubles with memory : open up to 16/20 pages loaded with pictures under IE7 you won't be able to do anything unless you close some pages (right click gets disabled, menu don't let you save pages etc...) and under FF2, the browser becomes heavy and the system literally crawls.. and this is with 2GB of memory :x...[/OT]

IE7, Firefox and Opera are all great browsers. However, I like Firefox 2.0 the most, followed by IE7. To me, I just find using Opera a little "weird," with its unique rendering engine and the way the UI is organized and displayed.

Just installed IE7. There are vast improvements here. To me it is better than FF 1.5.

I really like the Favourites Center, which is a wise idea. The only thing I would hope is that Microsoft enables us to login to our 'passport' via IE7, then imports all favourites. That way it's not actually permamently on there, but only when we login.

IE 7 has a clean, slick now, compared to IE 6. But with Firefox you can pretty much change what you want to do with it.

For now IE7 over FF 1.5. Have to wait and see what FF2 can do.
