Most modern mice are programmable in that regard.

jtchange
make sure that browser.tabs.opentabfor.middleclick is set to true. and like the above poster said, make sure your middle mouse works in other applications as well as a middle mouse

tcsdoc
Good luck waiting for Microsoft to release a driver update to enhance your Firefox experience.... ;) Try looking for the Tabs extension for firefox as another work-around for your problem. Gavin001
Mines stopped working after the last Logitech update i had to start to double click the middle button for it to work! Atm i just exit the Logitech Setpoint software when windows loads up! once i get a bit of time i'll move to an older version of Set Point!

Lighthalzen
When I installed the drivers for my Logitech Mouse & Keyboard, I can't use the Middle Click either. So I went to the Logitech Control Thingy and change my Middle Button to "Generic Button" and "BAM!", it works wonderfully again. Now I don't know about Microsoft's mouse, but you can try playing around with the button settings, see if that would help. :D
RangerLG
If you use the MS Mouse software (Intellipoint I think its called), it will change the behavior of the middle button.
