Perhaps because it was designed for IE? :p

If I could install Firefox in all my college computers, it would be great. The thing is - once the PC is shut down, all the downloaded data gets erased.

Same here, but i have portable firefox installed on a usb pen drive (you can use mp3 player) and all i do is plug it into my school pc and start firefox from the usb drive.

our school has both.

let people make the choice about what they want to use, dont force one option upon them.

Uh, schools don't really care about the choice. It's about what browser will function properly and will display most websites correctly. Reason why no one's ever changed from IE6 half the time is because there wasn't a need to. But since schools generally update all the computers to the latest stable upgrades, I can see where IE7 would become an issue (since it's going up on the automatic download). Also most people who've used IE6 their whole life would probably feel more comfortable on Firefox as IE7 really changed up their UI (which I don't mind, but I wish is was able to be customized better).
