WiMP 11 and Streaming Video to Xbox 360

Recommended Posts

I'm having problems streaming video (or anything for that matter) to my Xbox 360 with the recent Windows Media Player 11 and the Fall Update. My 360 does not even see my computer and I'm not sure why. I ran the self-diagnostic tests and it fails at the last stage, "PC Connection" IIRC.

When I had Windows Media Connect it was working fine, streaming music, pictures, etc. without a hitch.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, and my 360 is wired to a Linksys Router that my home network is on. DMZ is enabled on the Router to my PCs IP Address.

I thought I'd ask in here for a little help before calling up Microsoft since that may take much longer. Has anyone had any problems with WiMP 11 and streaming to the 360?

Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks!

did you uninstall Windows Media Connect? It's still required for WMP 11 to properly send everything.

Off-topic: Just got back from Borat, ****ing amazing movie.

My understanding is that Media Connect isn't needed, I've not installed that yet mine streams fine through WMP11. One thing I have found is that it seems to take a while for it to recognise it.

Although I'm sure you know already, don't forget to choose media sharing in WMP11 for the Xbox and also make sure that WMP11 is running. I think also there are 5-6 ports that needed opening up on the router too.

Mine works but as I say, sometimes takes a lil while (1-2 mins) before it seems to find the songs/films.

Why is your PC set up as a DMZ? That completely defeats the purpose of having a router/firewall and isn't going to change anything for a problem that is happening behind the router (assuming both your 360 and PC are connected to the same router).

DMZ was set for my sharing PC just to see if it would affect anything, apparently it did not. I understand DMZ is only for outside connections in and vice-versa but you never really know with MS products (no offense :p ).

I did not uninstall Windows Media Connect before installing WiMP 11. So since it did not work with WMC still installed, I will try un-installing it and see if that helps.

Off-topic: Yea, Borat was pretty hilarious. I just got back from it too.

Nobody? Any ideas? I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft and the tech suggested using a Cross-Over cable instead of my Ethernet cable to connect my 360 to the Router (yes, Router). At that point I figured he wouldn't be much help... so I don't know what else to try. :(

Does the 360 not show up on the PC when you go to the Media Sharing dialog?

The PC can see the Xbox 360 just fine. It's the 360 that is having problems seeing the PC. I have another partition on this same computer that has a Vista beta on it and WiMP 11 as well. Sharing works fine on the Vista partition, but not Windows XP. So weird, I have no idea what's wrong.

I had this same problem with the exact same hardware as you.

First, turn off media sharing in Windows Media Player 11 and exit out of the program.

Go to My Computer, click Tools -> Folder Options, then click the View tab - make sure you check see hidden folders and uncheck hide protected operating system files.

Then go into C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/DRM and delete everything in here.

Go back to Windows Media Player 11 and turn media sharing on, allow your 360, and try again.

If that doesn't work, try taking down any firewalls on your PC. It turns out Windows Live OneCare was blocking my 360 from finding my computer, and it had an option to allow a 360 to connect through without disabling the entire firewall.

There's your problem. The 360 is going to detect your Vista and XP as two seperate entities. So in order to use the XP partition, you'll have to "Disconnect" that PC connection using the 360. And when it "detects" a PC connection your XP share should come up.

Sadly the 360 doesn't support multiple profiles for PC shares. So you'll have to do this everytime.

Wow, that worked beautifully! Thank you so much!! :D

Just out of curiosity, how did you figure out that you had to do that to get it to work?

Actually, I'm pretty sure the 360 supports multiple PC profiles/connections. Maybe not at the same time, but after doing what Admodieus outlined it worked fine right away.

I can only stream WMV files from MP11 to the xbox360. Can anyone help on how to stream divx videos?

For that you need Media Center and Transcode 360

Just wait a while, I'm sure a new program will be released that will enable DivX streaming over WiMP11

im having a similair proble, however i dont have the DRM file that Admodieus' method uses.

My WiMP11 on XP SP2 can detect my 360, and it is allowed, its just my 360 cant see the pc. under the connections in the 360, it says the name of my computer, but it wont connect, fails on "PC CONNECTION". my 360 is directly connected to my pc via an ethernet cable.

Yeah, same problem here, new with the Xbox 360 so maybe it's me.

My WinXP Pro SP2 and WMP11 can see the Xbox, it's shared in the library. The Xbox can see the PC but can't connect to it. My PC and Xbox are connected by wire to a LinkSys 54g router. I don't have any firewall on WinXP (disabled the included one). Is there something to do with the router??

Also, the Xbox point to : www.xbox.com/pcsetup but their is nothing there now, just link to help file. I can't find the Media Sharing software they say I need to install.

So I can't play MP3, can't see my pictures and can't play videos... By the way, is WMP11 used to share the pictures too??
