Gears of War Official Thread

Recommended Posts

woohoo, finally beat the game. On casual of course, but I would rather play an easy game then a hard one. If I keep dying I don't enjoy it. I may go back through on the higher difficulties to get the achievement points.

If you play on Hardcore do you get the points for the lower difficulties as well? Or do you have to play the lower difficulties through to get the achievement points?

Wouldn't it be 10.2 ? lol :)

 Can't comprehend!

I've never understood why there was a .1 after the 5.

Time to look it up on Wikipedia! :geek:

EDIT: Ugh, I just realized it's Dolby Digital.

As soon as this semester ends, I'm getting a 360 for this game, even if I have to shoulder the entire cost myself :)

As oppose to mommy and daddy buying it for you? Sounds like life is tough.

I don't like how the screen is split for multiplayer. I wish there was an option to split it vertically so that each person gets a reasonable screen to look at. With it split horizontally the AR is too much.

5 - Front Left, Front Center, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right

.1 - sub-wolfer

I think that is why it is called 5.1. 5 speakers for surround position, and .1 for larger dynamic range.

Not smart... not smart at all.

Unless you are absolutely certain you will not ever want to play online it isn't smart. It isn't right either (but who cares about that these days anyway :pinch: ).

You never know, there may be an "XBox 360 Genuine Advantage" program that creeps onto your xbox and makes it self-destruct if it detects a mod.

Heh, whatever. I'm a third year Electrical Engineering student with a $5000 student loan to pay off. Not gonna stop me from buying Gears, though. :)

For those of you who have finished it, how long did it take? My buddy and I are gonna try and finish it off before the long weekend is over.

*entirely O.T.*

Well, then your solution is simple: take out a larger student loan next semester so that you can get a nice HDTV set w/ your shiny new xbox :D.

Haven't you figured out what college is good for yet? You'll be an EE so you won't have any problems paying it back as long as you can be responsible.

Me on the other hand...well..thats a different story. One word of advice: try to pay off your student loans as soon as possible. For me, they were low interest while I was in school. After I finished school they shot from 2% to 6.8% immediately. Thats more interest then my car loan!

Anyway, I wasn't being too serious. But I have friends my age (25) that are still getting an allowance from their parents and it is pretty pathetic.

5-ish hours for my friend and I. I was terrible when I started. I'm sure we can get it under that if we tried again.

Europe has lots of good things. You have Germany, France and Italy. That means you have the best cars, clothes, food and mechanical stuff. What's so bad about not getting video games right away? You guys already have everything else, so just deal with it.

So far I'm very impressed with the game but haven't actually made it far enough to give a worth while review.

The graphics are stunning though..very impressed with how smooth everything looks. Best graphics I've seen on an xbox 360 games.

Gameplay is still a little awkward for me. I have very little "training" w/ FPS games and gamepads, and this game plays a LOT like a FPS. The 3rd person angle is nice as the character models are terrific and it makes sense to be 3rd person because of the "cover" aspects of the game.

I still would much rather be playing this game with a keyboard+mouse... I just don't feel like I can aim fast enough with the gamepad then I can with a mouse.

The ambiance of the game is fantastic as well as the music. I look forward to progressing forward but I'm finding that it takes me a couple of tries per battle before I progress on the easiest difficulty setting!

I haven't had a "disc read error" yet.. *knock on wood*. I was having that error when I purchased Dead Rising. When I took it back to Gamestop the guy was a real dick saying "this disc is prestine..don't know what your problem is..." blah blah blah. He eventually gave me another copy and the new copy worked perfectly fine w/ no disc read error at all.

I hate Gamestop and I've decided to stop going there. I actually had this game on reserve there and they STILL don't have it in to this date. I called them since the 7th and they've said everyday "it should be in tomorrow..." I eventually went to Best Buy and they had it on the 8th *roll eyes*. Screw gamestop. I don't know why all the employees have such smug attitudes. For GOD SAKE YOU WORK AT A VIDEO GAME RETAIL OUTLET...that does not make you "the ****" by any standards. Ok..sorry for that tangent. Just every time I go in there one of the employees says something smarky like "oh that game is really hard to find...blah blah blah" whatever, i can order it online right now and have it in two days you ****ing ######.

Don't get me started on how they are always trying to get you to reserve games (which they never get on the release date) or sell back game for **** amounts. I mean, christ, they give you a whole ****ing $5 discount on USED xbox 360 games.. WTF is up with that?!?!?!? Then they say you can buy a "card" which will give you a reasonable price. I shouldn't have to buy a ****ing card to get a decent price on a USED game you ****ing ######.

Ok..i'm done.

As the manager of an EBGames in my local town, I can comfortably say that maybe it's just the people who live in your area(s) that give you attitudes. My employees and I are a nice bunch, we get irritated at times like anyone else but for the most part we're very customer-service oriented.

As for reserving games and trading them in, both things ARE pretty damn helpful to the customers. First off, if you trade in games enough you 'can' save a good amount of money. $5 off an Xbox360 game is a good deal in my opinion considering most of the games *just* came out, and $5 is $5. Pack of smokes, some gas to get you home, lunch, whatever. I have customers come in and save anywhere from $15-$25 in one transaction, and they come in repeatedly throughout the week! That adds up pretty fast my friend. And reserving games is just a good idea no matter what so I won't even honor that with an explaination. As an EBGames/Gamestop employee, we're required (and we choose to) ask customers about trading in and subscribing to the discount program. Think about it, it saves YOU money, but its pretty much all profit on our end, the $15 for the card that is. What your 'actually' buying is the subscription to Game Informer, and you get all these EXTRA benefits for free. It's just us doin our job guys, so give us a break

It must be the people locally then. I mean... i know you don't train your employees to be jerks.

I don't want to derail the topic too much, but the jerks at the gamestop here will always grab the display box and try to sell me the disc that came out of the display box! That infuriates me! I always ask for a properly packaged product and their snark attitude replys with "its the exact same." One time they tried it and the disc was scratched all to hell. They were trying to sell me a used game as a new one! **** heads. I hate gamestop and won't go back, ever.

I've had too many incidents with the store and won't go back.

And I don't care what you say, $5 is pretty dang weak if you ask me. I'd spend $5 for the peace of mind that the disc had never been used before and was mint.

I also hate how the employees were always trying to get me to bring in my old games. What is with all the pressure? You have "We buy and sell used games" all over the store. I don't like be pressured to sell something while I'm trying to buy something for a crap amount of money. I consider my games a collection and I won't ever sell them. But I've seen kids in there with stacks of games and the employees saying that the stack is only worth about $15 and the kids sell it to them! I want to shake the kid and tell them that those games are worth more if you keep them then if you sell them back to ****ing gamestop which will sell them for $30 a piece!

my roommates and I beat the game yesterday on hardcore, and as a whole, we were all pleased with the game

but....Act 5 seemed a little short. Act 4 definately felt like the hardest part of the game, and we reached the consensus that Act 5 was a joke.

We beat General Raam in two tries, but I think it was really easy because we both had torque bows and were able to **** him up really easily. We've started on Insane now and it definately feels like it'll be more gratifying when we beat it.

Been playing GOW longer, and I absolutely love it now. I think it just takes a good hour or so to get used to so you don't die as much -- been playing on hardcore and haven't died since the first time I played it (although I did have teammates die that made me have to restart some missions... ugh).

Online is much better than I thought it was, but it can still be annoying depending on who you play with. For one, I find that people online either have to work all together or all alone (if that makes sense). They never want to coordinate an attack -- they always want to stay grouped together, which makes it easier for nade kills and things like that, or they go lone ranger style. I also think the chainsaw is a bit unfair online since, as far as I know, there's no way to get out of it (is there?).

Single-player rocks my world, though. Online's still great, and it's taking me a little bit to get used to, but SP's where it's at IMO.

I need to subscribe to XBL for another year. I want to play this online.

What the hell is with the woman's voice narrating in some parts of the game and at the end? Is she like the Locust Queen or something? Also, I beat Raam on my first try

I think I'm going to play through it again to see if anything new pops out at me.

Yeah, Act 5 was a little short, but definitely fun. It makes up for it though because I thought Act 4 was quite long.

I beat it on hardcore the other day, tons of fun, I'm going to try insane now :p
