IE7: Internet Shortcut Icons PROBLEM

Recommended Posts

I waited till the final release of IE7 to upgrade. When i finally upgraded i noticed that the internet shortcut icons do not appear as the new ie7 icon. they dont even appear as the ie6 icons. After installing IE7 all my internet shortcut icons were replaced by a generic windows icon. I know there are other people out there with the same problem from searching the internet. I have yet to find a fix for my problem. Will microsoft eventually put out an update that will correct the problem. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I went into tools>folder options>file types and scrolled down to .URL. The icon shown there is the generic one. However, when i click advanced it displays the proper icon. My computer jus isnt recognizing it for some odd reason.

Do they stay that way after you've opened the favorite in IE 7? The icon should be replaced by the site's favicon or the generic IE 7 icon.

You could also try: In windows explorer, navigate to your favorites folder. right click on a favorite, click properties, change icon, if necessary browse to url.dll, select the IE 7 icon.

I have the same problem with the icons being just generic windows ones instead of the IE7 icons.

I don't have a solution, but I did find something suspicous:

In C:\Windows\ie7 (hidden folder), the iexplore.exe file is still the 6.0 version.

It appears that IE7 installation did not reach that folder and now the files that should all correspond to v.7 are confused because of the random appearance of v.6.

I posted this in another thread, but if anyone sees it here and knows how to fix that, many people would be grateful.

Update on this issue:

When I first installed IE7 it was through Windows Automatic Update, so my anti-virus and other anti-malware software was running in the background. I uninstalled IE7, downloaded the .exe installer from the Internet Explorer website, disabled all anti-malware software and reinstalled. And what do you know, the icons in the favorites folder look as they should (IE7 blue e with gold halo on white page).

but

In File Options - File Types, things are still off.

The URL icon under "extensions" looks like a generic windows icon.

If you have URL selected and click "advanced" the icon in the preview is the IE6 blue e on white page.

If you then click "change icon" it takes you to the system32\url.dll icon options where the IE7 blue e with gold halo on white page appears to be selected. Selecting it again and clicking ok takes you back to the "advanced" icon preview which still has the IE6 icon.

Also, if you go to the "change" (with which program the file will open) window, there are two options for Internet Explorer. One is represented by the IE7 homepage icon (purplish house) and the other is the IE6 big blue "e."

This is all odd in general since on my other computer all anti-virus/malware live protection was running and it seems to have installed all icons normally.

INTERNET SHORTCUT PROBLEM FIX!!!!!

I had this same problem after installing IE7. The only thing that worked for me was to make Internet Explorer my default browser. I assumed it was but, when I went into my Internet Options, I was surprised to see it was not. Click on Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab. More than likely, it will state that Internet Explorer is "not" your default browser. Click the button to make it your default browser and your icons should all change to the default IE7 icon.
