720p vs 1080i

Recommended Posts

I am going to get an HDTV for my xbox360 and for its HD-DVD Drive +

it runs 1080i and 720p

i have been looking at the Toshiba 27WLT56 27"

but its only 720p is 1080i better? or not because it is interlaced?

You'll notice a bigger difference between 790p and 1080i than you will with 1080i and 1080p.

for tv i use 1080i because i notice everything is much sharper, and less scaling is happening since most broadcasts are 1080i here. For Xbox 360 I use 720p because progressive gives you a bit smoother picture which benefits gaming.

HD ready TVs can display 720p and 1080i. 720p is upscaled to 1366x768p, and 1080i is deinterlaced and downscaled to 1366x768p. I don't think it will be able to display 1080p content.

TVs labeled as "Full HD" are the ones that display everything in 1920x1080* and can display 1080p.

are you kidding me? IT's a 27" TV.... even EDTV looks great on those things. HDTV wont look any better than digital. For a 40+ inch TV then yeah 1080i will show great improvement but anything below there's just not enough pixel density for it to make a difference. If you take a huge highly detailed picture and put it on your cell phone it wont be any sharper than one that fits your cell screen. Take the image from your cellphone and view it on your TV (even a 19" TV) and see how grainy and blurry that thing is vs the highly detailed one that matches the TV.

You're still only going to get either 1080i or 720p, regardless of which settings you use. If you're using an LCD, you're getting 720p (unless its a 1080p set), period. On a tube, it'll always be 1080i, regardless of what your device is sending out.

On a 27" set, you won't notice a damn difference and I can't believe anyone would claim other wise. The set is 720p and that's fine. It's high definition, true high definition, in spite of what Sony would have you believe.

First, TVs display either 720p or 1080i, not both. They accept both, but don't display it.

Second, Sony does not define "true" HD. 1080p is just another choice, best seen on larger TVs.
